Several people say eating kiwi fruit gets rid of mouth ulcers
#2 - a Mom - 01/04/2008 - 14:24
Sulphuric acid can be found in batteries. That is not a good advice comment, Glen because over application would eat through your entire lip. But I guess moving the problem from the ulcer into your dissolving mouth is a way of going about it.
#3 - skepi - 02/03/2008 - 08:02
place an asprin on the ulcer for a few minutes. numbs it right up. temporary relief only. :-[]
#4 - patti - 02/07/2008 - 20:33
3% peroxide - take a mouthful straight from the bottle... hold in your mouth for 5 to 10 minutes - kills the bacteria, and reduces the mouth ulcer - gone the following day
#5 - Jackie - 02/28/2008 - 01:33
PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF A LOT OF PAIN AND DO NOT FOLLOW MOST OF THE ABOVE SUGGESTIONS.

Acids will cause AGGRAVATION AND ENLARGEMENT OF THE ULCER. Tomato juice, acidic fruit, etc. DO NOT CURE ULCERS.. It is a similar principal as having a stomach ulcer. use of acids will make it worse.

A simple home remedy is to use old fashioned DARK BROWN molasses. Put some of it on the ulcer and just let it sit on the ulcer. It relieves pain, reduces size and Cures it.

I have also heard that Organic Raw Honey heals them too, using the same method, although I haven't tried that remedy myself.
#6 - Steve - 03/28/2008 - 12:18
Tooth paste for a mouth ulcer is not a good idea at all! It only aggravates it further and has no healing affect at all, only extra unneccesary pain!>-(
#7 - David Rutenberg - 03/30/2008 - 10:30
If u place buttter on the ulcer for 1 minute then put salt on it it will clear it up it really works surprisingly
#8 - Robin - 04/07/2008 - 21:53
take a glass of luke warm water and disolve some table salt in it. Then, swish the water around in your mouth for a minute or 2. Also if you wish you can gargle it too. do this 2-3 times a day or as necesary .It isn't a imediate cure but it does help with pain.
#9 - Jaimee - 04/27/2008 - 18:54
Dab just a very little amount of Albotyl over the mouth sore (stomatitis) and leave on for a while. You will feel some sharp pain and tinglin on the sore. This will cause the sore to become very white--then this will signal you when to rinse your mouth with water. Only one application of Albotyl usually helps and the healing process will follow after this. You will also almost instantly feel relieved from the pain and you will start to enjoy eating again.
#10 - Ed - 05/25/2008 - 03:51
Placing a wet teabag on the affected area, or drink warm tea a push it down to the place of the ulcer. i found these worked really wel
#11 - Jane - 05/31/2008 - 15:56
B-)

A suggestion, dont bad mouth sulphuric acid unless you've tried it, I had the worst 2 weeks of my life when my whole mouth was covered in ulcers, I used the Pharmacies own Sulphuric Acid swab and not only was my mouth numb for 2 days so I could eat again but the Ulcers have all gone!!
And no it's not the same concentration of acid as a battery for heaven sake people use your brains please.
#12 - Tidgy - 06/18/2008 - 12:53
Rub table salt onto the ulcer before bedtime. It hurts like crazy but it takes just 2 applications to heal.
#13 - Felicia - 06/18/2008 - 22:50
Listerine works great. Use it several times a day. Gets rid of the ulcer within a few days. :-)
#14 - Tammy - 07/22/2008 - 22:08
get a bottle of hydrogen peroxide dilute from chemist and hold about a teaspoon full over the mouth ulcer until it has completely fizzed up and then spit... serves as instant relief AND mouth ulcer will be gone very fast if you do this a few times a day
#15 - miseuisce - 08/05/2008 - 16:27
Don t touch your tongue frequently to the ulcer , it increases .Apply pure ghee
#16 - Mrs Karoona Gupta - 08/22/2008 - 00:03
yea, um butter and salt hurts like crazy- actually any salt directly on the sore- i read somewhere else that taking vitamin B helps- i would get the Vitamin B Complex- it also has the folic acids which are said to help it as well. Also taking L-lysine and acidophilus. Someone also said something about toothpaste- def. a bad idea, most toothpaste has what is called SLS (sodium laryl sulfate i believe) helps in causeing ulcers. so there is my two cents :-)
#17 - sydney - 09/03/2008 - 16:45
Apply Smile gel on the infected area;-)
#18 - sweety-India - 09/14/2008 - 01:28
my cosin had a real bad mouth ulcer that her jaw even got swollen, she used battery acid from the battery on it and it healed. shes afraid of dentists so has always used this for toothache too. i seen with my own eyes. it works.
#19 - Beverley - 09/23/2008 - 10:21
Oh jeez :-o
Here I am, thinking that lemons were the treatment for the kind of annoying pain from a minor mouth ulcer :-D

Well, to offset the pain, I usually just chew gum. After the flavor is gone, you just put the gum next to the ulcer. Perfectly safe. Also, it works better if it's mint gum, something like Trident (the blue packs).
#20 - Fishyfish - 10/07/2008 - 20:50
Although acids aren't good for a mouth ulcer, if you take a cotton swab and generously dab cider vinegar on the mouth ulcer, if helps reduce the swelling and some of the irritation (a bit of pain still lingers, though). I just tried it and my upper lip practically decreased in size. Do that multiple times throughout the day and it should clear up, or at least give some relief.
#21 - ow mouth ulcers - 10/08/2008 - 09:44
get a piece of garlic cut a bit of make same cuts on it and put same olive oil on it press the garlic on to the ulcer for about 1 minute and the pain andswelling are gone it realy does work
#22 - maria - 10/24/2008 - 01:05
For temporary relief, make a mouthwash of equal parts Cherry Benadryl and Cherry Maalox. Either swish over entire mouth or use a cotton swab to apply several drops to the ulcer. Not only will it numb it (longer that Chloraseptic), but it will promote healing. A dentist friend told me this and it does help. :-)
#23 - Cindy - 10/31/2008 - 14:21
Mix equal parts of liquid Benadryl and Milk of Magnesia, Mylanta or Pepto Bismol and swish around in your mouth, then swallow. Overnight the ulcers will disappear or at least improve 90% I've tried everything for my recurring ulcers and nothng has ever worked till my sister suggested this simple remedy.
#24 - Jan - 11/18/2008 - 23:27
put vegemite on it
#25 - hello - 11/23/2008 - 07:01

#26 - katelyn atkinson - 12/05/2008 - 21:51
Came on here desperately looking for a pain relief for a very sore mouth ulcer, tried having a cup of tea as someone suggested, and worked a treat as a quick pain relief! dont think it would cure the mouth ulcer, but tea is something that i can just drink constantly, unlike mouthwash lol :-D
#27 - Marianne - 12/16/2008 - 16:47
Ok, molasses burned like heck!!! So does toothpaste!!
#28 - Ken - 12/16/2008 - 22:01
Try putting a cold tea bag on the ulcer. Tastes bad but gives instant pain relief... ahhh...;-)
#29 - Ellie - 12/19/2008 - 02:11
Peppermint Oil feels the best!
#30 - Karen - 12/27/2008 - 11:49
Hi all,
I was somewhat glad to read I am not the only one afflicted with these incredibly painful things. I read all the responses and used the only thing I had available to me out of all those suggested, LISTERMINT and IT WORKED for me, I am in Australia so formulations may vary by country of origin. Thank you to all who post. I started rinsing my mouth out last night and today I can eat and talk without pain.
#31 - Cameron - 12/27/2008 - 21:36
My suggestion is putting vegemite on it. Mouth Ulcers occur usually by difficiency of vitamin B, which is found highly in vegemite. I STRONGLY reccommend NOT putting any sort of battery acid, or sulphuric acid in your mouth without medical consent. Especially battery acid. That is very dangerous. Rubbing some table salt on it will work too for temporary relief from discomfort.

Good Luck!

;-)
#32 - Alana - 01/01/2009 - 01:05

#33 - bri - 01/08/2009 - 03:16
ROSEMARY, an herb! Use whole leaves or pieces, place them on the ulcer and keep there for 3-5 minutes, longer if you can, up to 10 minutes. I'm not certain HOW or WHY it works, but it does help the ulcers heal quicker. Won't work for everyone, it's worth a try!
#34 - OUCH! - 01/08/2009 - 04:22
I use Rolaids and Tums, they are antacids. And they help.
#35 - Janey - 01/16/2009 - 12:01

#36 - Sarah - 02/01/2009 - 23:51
Extremely glad to have found this site with such useful comments.
#37 - Tarun - 02/10/2009 - 03:19
Suck on a zinc lozenge. Make sure it does not have citric acid in it for flavoring. It's best to buy them at the health food store because they have fewer additives.
#38 - Michelle - 02/15/2009 - 17:05
corsodyl mouthwash is what we use on the ward for the kids who have chemo related mucositis (mouth ulcers) It is what doctors usually prescribe, it temporarily discolours your teeth but its worth it.
#39 - ellen - 02/16/2009 - 17:17
Green Tea bag works!!! I am trying it right now on the tongue ulcer and it is relieving me from the awful pain that I had for 2 whole days!!! Great temp. relieve!!!

Does anyone know if mouthwash causes mouth ulcers?
I switched from Listerine to Dentyl and within a week i had got 4 mouth ulcers, on my lip, under my tougue, on my throat, on my top gum. Hurts like hell
#43 - mark - 03/14/2009 - 06:49
Most mouthwashes contain alcohol, an irritant to ulcers. Alcohol is also responsible for dehydration, a major cause of bad breath. Avoid mouthwashes with alcohol, they are available but you have to read the label. Colgate do one and you can tell from the bottle as it says AF (alcohol free). Alcohol also stains your teeth so using an alcohol free mouthwash will help keep your teeth white. A very cheap mouthwash is a tumbler of warm water with two drops of T-Tree Oil. A small bottle of T-Tree will cost no more than a fiver. Being antiseptic and antibiotic in nature it gets to the route of oral problems very quickly. Diluted this way it is even safe to swallow though it doesnt taste nice. LOL. T-tree can be used neat on spots, acne, cuts, and helps with rejuvenating the localised injury area. Gargle with it to ease mouth pain from ulcers. T-tree is also good for getting rid of lice, fleas and dandruff - diluted of course - pour a jug of warm water with just a few drops of T-tree over your head for the last rinse and you will reap the benefits. So you see that little bottle goes an awful long way for lots of every day uses. Go buy some and try it out, you will fall in love with it. Peppermint oil directly on the ulcer is great too but be careful, drop a drop onto a cotton bud and apply carefully as it really shouldnt be swallowed. Good luck all - by the way, I am a qualified clinical aromatherapist.
#44 - H - 03/15/2009 - 12:36
put dispin staight on it...numbs 4 a few min though >-(
or try tcp
#45 - adele - 03/15/2009 - 12:49
I have suffered with mouth ulcers for years, my sister is a dental nurse and told me to stop putting things on them as it spreads them,
Now i use Corsodyl mouthwash and its the best thing I`ve tried, the dentist told me you can dilute it 50/50 and it will still do the job and doesnt stain as much, also dont have tea or coffee for a hour after using it. Any staining is very faint and will go after a few days anyway and the results are well worth it if you suffer quite badly, its a small price to stop your face throbbing!:-)
#46 - Vic - 03/23/2009 - 08:19

#49 - XOXOXOXO - 04/21/2009 - 05:42
Apply honey undiluted directly onto the ulcer a few times daily. No pain. Quick healing. Does not torture the ulcer further.
#50 - tansl - 04/21/2009 - 07:51
After reading all the comments, I went out to walgreens looking for Oral-B Amosan but they didn't have it, so I bought what I thought was the liquid version by Orajel. I didn't think much of it. I used Corsodyl before (which you can't buy in the US as of today, I brought it from Hungary) and it only helped me the first time I used it. Anyways. I bought the Orajel Anitseptic Mouth Sore Rinse. I rinsed with it for about 1.5 minutes and I'm not exaggerating, the rinse started working within minutes. The pain started going away and by the time I went to bed I could barely feel any pain. This morning when I woke up (which is the next morning) the pain was gone. I think I still have the sores but they are very little and I bet after rinsing again this morning they will totally go away. I'm really happy I bought this product. It is also good for gum irritation, cheek bites and denture irritation. The active ingredient is Hydrogen peroxide, which I read about here in the above comments too. I totally recommend it to anyone who has mouth/cancer sores. It costs $7.99 at Walgreens. (You can also order it online if it's not urgent)
#51 - ladybug - 05/17/2009 - 08:53
This is a sign of deficiency of B12. Buy some B complex, make sure B12 is included in it and take twice every day. If you have mouth ulcer for more than 7 days, use mouth wash to avoid infection. Mouth ulcer goes away in 7 days when you start taking vitamin B12. If you want to quicken the process, buy "Hydrastis Q", a homeopathy medicine. Add ten drops of medicine in half cup of water and gurgle for 1 min every 3 hour (DO NOT SWALLOW. WASH MOUTH WITH CLEAN WATER AFTER.). Continue B12 for 2 weeks at least. If you are experiencing continuous recurrence of this kind of ulcer, you might have "Zinc" and "Iron" deficiency as well, so add them (Zinc: Oysters, Wheat Bran, All Bran cereal; Iron: Spinach, All Bran cereal, liver, kidney) in you diet.
#52 - Partha - 06/04/2009 - 13:36
Just a little Cream of Tartar. At first there will be a little pain, but after a minute or so it completely relieves the pain. Also helps with the swelling a little.
#53 - Dustin - 06/05/2009 - 23:30
I truly have deliverence with the site and everyone comments.

Thank you soo much.

I suffer from mouth ulcers once a month as well. I not only get one or two but I always get at the least 6 at a time. They are very painful and I cant eat. (which is not good, because I am already too thin to lose weight) Hopefully some of these suggestions will work and I can begin eating like a normal person.

Thanks alot :-)
#54 - Nettabug - 06/11/2009 - 10:20
apply salt directly on it, extremely painful for a few seconds but clears it up
#55 - pads - 06/16/2009 - 13:05
Wow it's nice to know I'm not the only one going through this horrible pain. I get them and I get them bad. Last year I got 27 ulcers in my mouth and I almost starved because eating was just too painful. I have heard of this medication called triiax that is supposed to be the best cure for them, but it is a little expensive. What I do for them is use CVS's oral cleanser at least once a day. This doesn't cure them or keep them from coming back but it will help them to go away quicker and helps great with the pain. Best of luck to everyone and I'm sorry you are all cursed with this awful affliction.
#56 - Adam - 06/16/2009 - 16:00

#59 - udontneed2no - 06/25/2009 - 09:38
WELL, I JUST WENT OUT & BOUGHT PEROXYL...HOPE IT WORKS BECAUSE I'M MISERABLE
#60 - JINKA - 06/26/2009 - 21:25
The salt directly on it and salt mixed with lukewarm water works like a charm. It hurts though, but what's worse the pain for a few minutes or the pain for 7-10 days while it heals on it's own? Think about it people. There's nothing that will take it away instantly but there are tons of things to do to prevent them. But I also know though that baking soda works really well. It's a bit softer than sticking straight salt on it but it still burns.
#61 - girlnextdoor - 07/01/2009 - 15:37
put some snuff right on it and rub it in
#62 - jodirt - 07/02/2009 - 21:34

#64 - nich - 07/06/2009 - 01:56
pharmacists recommended Colgate Orabase Paste giving it a try it numbs it and shields it. I will also try some of these home remedies, thanks and good luck to all.
#65 - inpain - 07/07/2009 - 20:57
buy a sall bottle of glycerine I.P (costs around Rs10/-) and appy the contnts (sweet) on the affected spots, the burning goes away in a few minutes. Do it 2 or three days and U will be out of the problem.
#66 - kamath ng - 07/09/2009 - 03:49
i have always used Gly-oxide, an oral antiseptic,(it's designed to be used in the mouth), and which can be purchased at any pharmacy and most discount department stores.(some store brands work just as well) peroxide is the active ingredient. it can be applied several times a day. by the end of the first day, you get some relief, and they usually clear up with 1-2 days.

The advice about sulphuric acid isn't as bad as it actually sounds. (although it is bad if people start dipping into car batteries and applying the acid into their mouth.).

The 'once' treatments from Bonjela, boots and oralmedic all contain Hydrobenzensulphonic acid, and sulphuric acid as primary ingredients! So maybe there was something in the comment after all.

#69 - Ell - 07/23/2009 - 02:38

Coool !! I didn't know there were so many home remedies. I went to an American doctor, and he suggested me a combination of benedryl+lycodene+maalox to swish thrice a day. Been doing that past 3 days but no use. I am going to try one of the above and see if that helps..
#72 - Pat - 08/02/2009 - 09:23

#73 - santosh - 08/09/2009 - 09:19
I had a mouth ulcer come up this morning. After reading all comments, I decided to try bicarbonate of soda and have just rinsed my mouth with a heaped teaspoon of this in a 1/3 cup of water. 3 rinses. My ulcer is now gone. All I have is a tiny red spot. Miraculous!
#74 - Lynn - 08/23/2009 - 21:01
GARGLE WITH PEROXIDE...BUT DO NOT SWALLOW RINSE WITH WATER REPEAT THIS PROCESS AS MANY TIMES AS U WANT A DAY THEY ARE USUALLY GONE THE NEXT DAY I'VE BEEN HAVING MOUTH ULCERS ALL MY LIFE SINCE I WAS 4 YRS OLD...THIS IS THE ONLY REMEDY THAT I HAVE FOUND TO BE QUICK AND EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE THEY ARE USUALLY GONE WITHIN A DAY OR TWO...BUT OF COURSE AS I DO NOT LIKE THE PAIN I GARGLE MY MOUTH WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE 3% SOLUTION AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. I couldn't sleep yesterday with d pain in my mouth and cheek. N i got up early to find tat it was mouth ulcer. Since this morning I have tried luke warm water with salt, dapped salt on the sore, applied bonjela, rinsed with listerin, applied cold ice, took paracetemols 3 times, had strepsils, took yokurt, nothing worked except that i got some breaks through paracetemols but it was back again and again. And it hurts so much. I called everyone, i cried, i have my dissertation due in few days and i couldn't concentrate except on the pain. I pray and i hope i will be ok tomorrow. Something should have worked.Damn!!!Now m trying manuka honey, it gives a little bit relief but now my throat is hurt and i have so much difficulty swallowing, eating, talking...

I tried honey - all it did was burn it. The teabag did give some relief but you had to keep moving the bag over as it kept losing it soothing feel. Teatree oil almost made me sick gargling it. I did use raw salt (have in the past, )but it hadn't been doing anything. So just stuck with the original salt and water mouth wash. They did eventually go away, so unsure if it was the salt/water gargle or if there time was up!! They took over a week. Another thing my partners Dad always swore by was to airdry them - leave your mouth open as much as possible. They don't like to be dry which makes sense as they are in a wet environment.
Good luck, theres nothing worse than catching the edge of the ulcer with your toothbrush. Totally sucks!!

Try bonjela to soothe the pain. it's usually used for babies when teething

I dont know if you can get this anywhere other than england but i use liquid anbesol. You can get it at any chemist and its an oral antisceptic/anaesthetic. It stings a lot when you put it on but in a few seconds it numbs the area completely and it lasts for ages XD also i find that the ulcers are gone faster when i use this than if i had just left them. Its really easy to use, you literally just dab it on. Hope this helps some because ulcers are such a pain for how tiny they can be!

I have a 2 year old with a mouth (inside and out) full of ulcers. He is in terrible pain, has had it for 5 days now. I don't know what to do. He doesn't understand the meaning of gargeling, so that wont work, I am not trying salt....any ideas?

There is actually a Rx called Swish and Spit that heals and comforts...It consists of Benadryl, Mylanta and Lidocaine. Obviously you can't pick up the lidocaine but swishing equals parts of Mylanta and Benadryl will truly heal.Benadryl helps with the inflamation (also providing a bit of numbness). For pediatric patients, you could try dabbing the above mixture directly on the ulcer with a swab. Afterall, thats the idea is getting the ulcers in contact with the solution...you should swish at least 3 times a day or more.

I've been dying for a week with hundreds of these things. My tongue has a white coating on it as well. Tried everything. This morning I decided to mix baking soda with water and try that. It seems to be a natural anestetic. Also, the coating is going away and that is within 2 hours and many rinses and gargles. Anyway, worth a try.

I have just been reading through all the home remedy suggestions. I have large very painful ulcer on roof of mouth for past 3 days. Have used salt washes and Kenalong meds from Chemist, with no great success. Have just tried the 3 - 4 drops of Tree Tree Oil in glass of luke warm water ............ instant relief. Thanks for the heads up, everyone.

Mix a little bit of unsulphured molasses and cream of tartar.
Stings a little bit, but eliminates pain in a minute or so (:

keep trying whatever you want. the best solution is dettol...but dont swallow it. Put it on a cotton and hold it on the ulcer. You will be good. ;-)

I suggest you get Molkosan - from your local Health Shop. It is a great cure for any mouth problems. Dilute it in a glass of water and rinse around your mouth. It tastes like vinegar but I used it last night and already my mouth ulcer on roof of my mouth feels so much better.

Okay. Just a quick follow up. Umm battery acid will be absorbed into your bloodstream and in even 0.002 microgram small doses can do permenant damage. Anything larger than 0.002 - can kill you. Google it.
It liquifys your capillaries first and then progresses to full and unstoppable internal bleeding. Please guys don't do it. I have severe pain and looking at any of these remidies brings tears. With my entire mouth one continual ulcer swilling benadryl (yes you'll cry) but you can eat a soft meal (corn kernals swallowed whole) I haven't eaten in over 3 days. Desperate but agony to even open my mouth.

Okay I have a severe case of ulcers that began covering my mouth and soft palate. Then they all joined making my

A yankee friend of mine told me that Vegemite would kill me as well... SO I'M EATING A HUGE SPOON FULL OF IT. Either I die or the ulcer will disappear.
