Several people say eating kiwi fruit gets rid of mouth ulcers
#2 - a Mom - 01/04/2008 - 14:24
Sulphuric acid can be found in batteries. That is not a good advice comment, Glen because over application would eat through your entire lip. But I guess moving the problem from the ulcer into your dissolving mouth is a way of going about it.
#3 - skepi - 02/03/2008 - 08:02
place an asprin on the ulcer for a few minutes. numbs it right up. temporary relief only. :-
#4 - patti - 02/07/2008 - 20:33
3% peroxide - take a mouthful straight from the bottle... hold in your mouth for 5 to 10 minutes - kills the bacteria, and reduces the mouth ulcer - gone the following day
#5 - Jackie - 02/28/2008 - 01:33
PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF A LOT OF PAIN AND DO NOT FOLLOW MOST OF THE ABOVE SUGGESTIONS.
Acids will cause AGGRAVATION AND ENLARGEMENT OF THE ULCER. Tomato juice, acidic fruit, etc. DO NOT CURE ULCERS.. It is a similar principal as having a stomach ulcer. use of acids will make it worse.
A simple home remedy is to use old fashioned DARK BROWN molasses. Put some of it on the ulcer and just let it sit on the ulcer. It relieves pain, reduces size and Cures it.
I have also heard that Organic Raw Honey heals them too, using the same method, although I haven't tried that remedy myself.
#6 - Steve - 03/28/2008 - 12:18
Tooth paste for a mouth ulcer is not a good idea at all! It only aggravates it further and has no healing affect at all, only extra unneccesary pain!>-(
#7 - David Rutenberg - 03/30/2008 - 10:30
If u place buttter on the ulcer for 1 minute then put salt on it it will clear it up it really works surprisingly
#8 - Robin - 04/07/2008 - 21:53
take a glass of luke warm water and disolve some table salt in it. Then, swish the water around in your mouth for a minute or 2. Also if you wish you can gargle it too. do this 2-3 times a day or as necesary .It isn't a imediate cure but it does help with pain.
#9 - Jaimee - 04/27/2008 - 18:54
Dab just a very little amount of Albotyl over the mouth sore (stomatitis) and leave on for a while. You will feel some sharp pain and tinglin on the sore. This will cause the sore to become very white--then this will signal you when to rinse your mouth with water. Only one application of Albotyl usually helps and the healing process will follow after this. You will also almost instantly feel relieved from the pain and you will start to enjoy eating again.
#10 - Ed - 05/25/2008 - 03:51
Placing a wet teabag on the affected area, or drink warm tea a push it down to the place of the ulcer. i found these worked really wel
#11 - Jane - 05/31/2008 - 15:56
A suggestion, dont bad mouth sulphuric acid unless you've tried it, I had the worst 2 weeks of my life when my whole mouth was covered in ulcers, I used the Pharmacies own Sulphuric Acid swab and not only was my mouth numb for 2 days so I could eat again but the Ulcers have all gone!!
And no it's not the same concentration of acid as a battery for heaven sake people use your brains please.
#12 - Tidgy - 06/18/2008 - 12:53
Rub table salt onto the ulcer before bedtime. It hurts like crazy but it takes just 2 applications to heal.
#13 - Felicia - 06/18/2008 - 22:50
Listerine works great. Use it several times a day. Gets rid of the ulcer within a few days. :-)
#14 - Tammy - 07/22/2008 - 22:08
get a bottle of hydrogen peroxide dilute from chemist and hold about a teaspoon full over the mouth ulcer until it has completely fizzed up and then spit... serves as instant relief AND mouth ulcer will be gone very fast if you do this a few times a day
#15 - miseuisce - 08/05/2008 - 16:27
Don t touch your tongue frequently to the ulcer , it increases .Apply pure ghee
#16 - Mrs Karoona Gupta - 08/22/2008 - 00:03
yea, um butter and salt hurts like crazy- actually any salt directly on the sore- i read somewhere else that taking vitamin B helps- i would get the Vitamin B Complex- it also has the folic acids which are said to help it as well. Also taking L-lysine and acidophilus. Someone also said something about toothpaste- def. a bad idea, most toothpaste has what is called SLS (sodium laryl sulfate i believe) helps in causeing ulcers. so there is my two cents :-)
#17 - sydney - 09/03/2008 - 16:45
Apply Smile gel on the infected area;-)
#18 - sweety-India - 09/14/2008 - 01:28
my cosin had a real bad mouth ulcer that her jaw even got swollen, she used battery acid from the battery on it and it healed. shes afraid of dentists so has always used this for toothache too. i seen with my own eyes. it works.
#19 - Beverley - 09/23/2008 - 10:21
Oh jeez :-o
Here I am, thinking that lemons were the treatment for the kind of annoying pain from a minor mouth ulcer :-D
Well, to offset the pain, I usually just chew gum. After the flavor is gone, you just put the gum next to the ulcer. Perfectly safe. Also, it works better if it's mint gum, something like Trident (the blue packs).
#20 - Fishyfish - 10/07/2008 - 20:50
Although acids aren't good for a mouth ulcer, if you take a cotton swab and generously dab cider vinegar on the mouth ulcer, if helps reduce the swelling and some of the irritation (a bit of pain still lingers, though). I just tried it and my upper lip practically decreased in size. Do that multiple times throughout the day and it should clear up, or at least give some relief.
#21 - ow mouth ulcers - 10/08/2008 - 09:44
get a piece of garlic cut a bit of make same cuts on it and put same olive oil on it press the garlic on to the ulcer for about 1 minute and the pain andswelling are gone it realy does work
#22 - maria - 10/24/2008 - 01:05
For temporary relief, make a mouthwash of equal parts Cherry Benadryl and Cherry Maalox. Either swish over entire mouth or use a cotton swab to apply several drops to the ulcer. Not only will it numb it (longer that Chloraseptic), but it will promote healing. A dentist friend told me this and it does help. :-)
#23 - Cindy - 10/31/2008 - 14:21
Mix equal parts of liquid Benadryl and Milk of Magnesia, Mylanta or Pepto Bismol and swish around in your mouth, then swallow. Overnight the ulcers will disappear or at least improve 90% I've tried everything for my recurring ulcers and nothng has ever worked till my sister suggested this simple remedy.
#24 - Jan - 11/18/2008 - 23:27

Came on here desperately looking for a pain relief for a very sore mouth ulcer, tried having a cup of tea as someone suggested, and worked a treat as a quick pain relief! dont think it would cure the mouth ulcer, but tea is something that i can just drink constantly, unlike mouthwash lol :-D
#27 - Marianne - 12/16/2008 - 16:47
Ok, molasses burned like heck!!! So does toothpaste!!
#28 - Ken - 12/16/2008 - 22:01
Try putting a cold tea bag on the ulcer. Tastes bad but gives instant pain relief... ahhh...;-)
#29 - Ellie - 12/19/2008 - 02:11
Peppermint Oil feels the best!
#30 - Karen - 12/27/2008 - 11:49
I was somewhat glad to read I am not the only one afflicted with these incredibly painful things. I read all the responses and used the only thing I had available to me out of all those suggested, LISTERMINT and IT WORKED for me, I am in Australia so formulations may vary by country of origin. Thank you to all who post. I started rinsing my mouth out last night and today I can eat and talk without pain.
#31 - Cameron - 12/27/2008 - 21:36
My suggestion is putting vegemite on it. Mouth Ulcers occur usually by difficiency of vitamin B, which is found highly in vegemite. I STRONGLY reccommend NOT putting any sort of battery acid, or sulphuric acid in your mouth without medical consent. Especially battery acid. That is very dangerous. Rubbing some table salt on it will work too for temporary relief from discomfort.
#32 - Alana - 01/01/2009 - 01:05
i tried vinegar i think it help, listerine workerd to i came on here desperatly tying to find something to relive the pain! i just dont no wat to put on it without making it worse the butter and salt maybe? it so sore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr on the lip thanks
#33 - bri - 01/08/2009 - 03:16
ROSEMARY, an herb! Use whole leaves or pieces, place them on the ulcer and keep there for 3-5 minutes, longer if you can, up to 10 minutes. I'm not certain HOW or WHY it works, but it does help the ulcers heal quicker. Won't work for everyone, it's worth a try!
#34 - OUCH! - 01/08/2009 - 04:22
I use Rolaids and Tums, they are antacids. And they help.
#35 - Janey - 01/16/2009 - 12:01

#37 - Tarun - 02/10/2009 - 03:19
Suck on a zinc lozenge. Make sure it does not have citric acid in it for flavoring. It's best to buy them at the health food store because they have fewer additives.
#38 - Michelle - 02/15/2009 - 17:05
corsodyl mouthwash is what we use on the ward for the kids who have chemo related mucositis (mouth ulcers) It is what doctors usually prescribe, it temporarily discolours your teeth but its worth it.
#39 - ellen - 02/16/2009 - 17:17
Green Tea bag works!!! I am trying it right now on the tongue ulcer and it is relieving me from the awful pain that I had for 2 whole days!!! Great temp. relieve!!!

I switched from Listerine to Dentyl and within a week i had got 4 mouth ulcers, on my lip, under my tougue, on my throat, on my top gum. Hurts like hell
#43 - mark - 03/14/2009 - 06:49
Most mouthwashes contain alcohol, an irritant to ulcers. Alcohol is also responsible for dehydration, a major cause of bad breath. Avoid mouthwashes with alcohol, they are available but you have to read the label. Colgate do one and you can tell from the bottle as it says AF (alcohol free). Alcohol also stains your teeth so using an alcohol free mouthwash will help keep your teeth white. A very cheap mouthwash is a tumbler of warm water with two drops of T-Tree Oil. A small bottle of T-Tree will cost no more than a fiver. Being antiseptic and antibiotic in nature it gets to the route of oral problems very quickly. Diluted this way it is even safe to swallow though it doesnt taste nice. LOL. T-tree can be used neat on spots, acne, cuts, and helps with rejuvenating the localised injury area. Gargle with it to ease mouth pain from ulcers. T-tree is also good for getting rid of lice, fleas and dandruff - diluted of course - pour a jug of warm water with just a few drops of T-tree over your head for the last rinse and you will reap the benefits. So you see that little bottle goes an awful long way for lots of every day uses. Go buy some and try it out, you will fall in love with it. Peppermint oil directly on the ulcer is great too but be careful, drop a drop onto a cotton bud and apply carefully as it really shouldnt be swallowed. Good luck all - by the way, I am a qualified clinical aromatherapist.

I have suffered with mouth ulcers for years, my sister is a dental nurse and told me to stop putting things on them as it spreads them,
Now i use Corsodyl mouthwash and its the best thing I`ve tried, the dentist told me you can dilute it 50/50 and it will still do the job and doesnt stain as much, also dont have tea or coffee for a hour after using it. Any staining is very faint and will go after a few days anyway and the results are well worth it if you suffer quite badly, its a small price to stop your face throbbing!:-)
#46 - Vic - 03/23/2009 - 08:19

After reading all the comments, I went out to walgreens looking for Oral-B Amosan but they didn't have it, so I bought what I thought was the liquid version by Orajel. I didn't think much of it. I used Corsodyl before (which you can't buy in the US as of today, I brought it from Hungary) and it only helped me the first time I used it. Anyways. I bought the Orajel Anitseptic Mouth Sore Rinse. I rinsed with it for about 1.5 minutes and I'm not exaggerating, the rinse started working within minutes. The pain started going away and by the time I went to bed I could barely feel any pain. This morning when I woke up (which is the next morning) the pain was gone. I think I still have the sores but they are very little and I bet after rinsing again this morning they will totally go away. I'm really happy I bought this product. It is also good for gum irritation, cheek bites and denture irritation. The active ingredient is Hydrogen peroxide, which I read about here in the above comments too. I totally recommend it to anyone who has mouth/cancer sores. It costs $7.99 at Walgreens. (You can also order it online if it's not urgent)
#51 - ladybug - 05/17/2009 - 08:53
This is a sign of deficiency of B12. Buy some B complex, make sure B12 is included in it and take twice every day. If you have mouth ulcer for more than 7 days, use mouth wash to avoid infection. Mouth ulcer goes away in 7 days when you start taking vitamin B12. If you want to quicken the process, buy "Hydrastis Q", a homeopathy medicine. Add ten drops of medicine in half cup of water and gurgle for 1 min every 3 hour (DO NOT SWALLOW. WASH MOUTH WITH CLEAN WATER AFTER.). Continue B12 for 2 weeks at least. If you are experiencing continuous recurrence of this kind of ulcer, you might have "Zinc" and "Iron" deficiency as well, so add them (Zinc: Oysters, Wheat Bran, All Bran cereal; Iron: Spinach, All Bran cereal, liver, kidney) in you diet.
#52 - Partha - 06/04/2009 - 13:36
Just a little Cream of Tartar. At first there will be a little pain, but after a minute or so it completely relieves the pain. Also helps with the swelling a little.
#53 - Dustin - 06/05/2009 - 23:30
I truly have deliverence with the site and everyone comments.
Thank you soo much.
I suffer from mouth ulcers once a month as well. I not only get one or two but I always get at the least 6 at a time. They are very painful and I cant eat. (which is not good, because I am already too thin to lose weight) Hopefully some of these suggestions will work and I can begin eating like a normal person.
Thanks alot :-)
#54 - Nettabug - 06/11/2009 - 10:20
apply salt directly on it, extremely painful for a few seconds but clears it up
#55 - pads - 06/16/2009 - 13:05
Wow it's nice to know I'm not the only one going through this horrible pain. I get them and I get them bad. Last year I got 27 ulcers in my mouth and I almost starved because eating was just too painful. I have heard of this medication called triiax that is supposed to be the best cure for them, but it is a little expensive. What I do for them is use CVS's oral cleanser at least once a day. This doesn't cure them or keep them from coming back but it will help them to go away quicker and helps great with the pain. Best of luck to everyone and I'm sorry you are all cursed with this awful affliction.
#56 - Adam - 06/16/2009 - 16:00

WELL, I JUST WENT OUT & BOUGHT PEROXYL...HOPE IT WORKS BECAUSE I'M MISERABLE
#59 - JINKA - 06/26/2009 - 21:25
The salt directly on it and salt mixed with lukewarm water works like a charm. It hurts though, but what's worse the pain for a few minutes or the pain for 7-10 days while it heals on it's own? Think about it people. There's nothing that will take it away instantly but there are tons of things to do to prevent them. But I also know though that baking soda works really well. It's a bit softer than sticking straight salt on it but it still burns.
#60 - girlnextdoor - 07/01/2009 - 15:37
put some snuff right on it and rub it in

buy a sall bottle of glycerine I.P (costs around Rs10/-) and appy the contnts (sweet) on the affected spots, the burning goes away in a few minutes. Do it 2 or three days and U will be out of the problem.
#65 - kamath ng - 07/09/2009 - 03:49
i have always used Gly-oxide, an oral antiseptic,(it's designed to be used in the mouth), and which can be purchased at any pharmacy and most discount department stores.(some store brands work just as well) peroxide is the active ingredient. it can be applied several times a day. by the end of the first day, you get some relief, and they usually clear up with 1-2 days.

The advice about sulphuric acid isn't as bad as it actually sounds. (although it is bad if people start dipping into car batteries and applying the acid into their mouth.).
The 'once' treatments from Bonjela, boots and oralmedic all contain Hydrobenzensulphonic acid, and sulphuric acid as primary ingredients! So maybe there was something in the comment after all.

I had a mouth ulcer come up this morning. After reading all comments, I decided to try bicarbonate of soda and have just rinsed my mouth with a heaped teaspoon of this in a 1/3 cup of water. 3 rinses. My ulcer is now gone. All I have is a tiny red spot. Miraculous!
#73 - Lynn - 08/23/2009 - 21:01
GARGLE WITH PEROXIDE...BUT DO NOT SWALLOW RINSE WITH WATER REPEAT THIS PROCESS AS MANY TIMES AS U WANT A DAY THEY ARE USUALLY GONE THE NEXT DAY I'VE BEEN HAVING MOUTH ULCERS ALL MY LIFE SINCE I WAS 4 YRS OLD...THIS IS THE ONLY REMEDY THAT I HAVE FOUND TO BE QUICK AND EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE THEY ARE USUALLY GONE WITHIN A DAY OR TWO...BUT OF COURSE AS I DO NOT LIKE THE PAIN I GARGLE MY MOUTH WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE 3% SOLUTION AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. BE BLESSED.

I couldn't sleep yesterday with d pain in my mouth and cheek. N i got up early to find tat it was mouth ulcer. Since this morning I have tried luke warm water with salt, dapped salt on the sore, applied bonjela, rinsed with listerin, applied cold ice, took paracetemols 3 times, had strepsils, took yokurt, nothing worked except that i got some breaks through paracetemols but it was back again and again. And it hurts so much. I called everyone, i cried, i have my dissertation due in few days and i couldn't concentrate except on the pain. I pray and i hope i will be ok tomorrow. Something should have worked.Damn!!!Now m trying manuka honey, it gives a little bit relief but now my throat is hurt and i have so much difficulty swallowing, eating, talking...
#76 - nam - 08/26/2009 - 16:16
I tried honey - all it did was burn it. The teabag did give some relief but you had to keep moving the bag over as it kept losing it soothing feel. Teatree oil almost made me sick gargling it. I did use raw salt (have in the past, )but it hadn't been doing anything. So just stuck with the original salt and water mouth wash. They did eventually go away, so unsure if it was the salt/water gargle or if there time was up!! They took over a week. Another thing my partners Dad always swore by was to airdry them - leave your mouth open as much as possible. They don't like to be dry which makes sense as they are in a wet environment.
Good luck, theres nothing worse than catching the edge of the ulcer with your toothbrush. Totally [@]!!
#77 - Lyn - 08/28/2009 - 22:20
Try bonjela to soothe the pain. it's usually used for babies when teething
#78 - wai - 08/29/2009 - 01:49
I dont know if you can get this anywhere other than england but i use liquid anbesol. You can get it at any chemist and its an oral antisceptic/anaesthetic. It stings a lot when you put it on but in a few seconds it numbs the area completely and it lasts for ages XD also i find that the ulcers are gone faster when i use this than if i had just left them. Its really easy to use, you literally just dab it on. Hope this helps some because ulcers are such a pain for how tiny they can be!
#79 - Jodie - 09/01/2009 - 18:13

I have a 2 year old with a mouth (inside and out) full of ulcers. He is in terrible pain, has had it for 5 days now. I don't know what to do. He doesn't understand the meaning of gargeling, so that wont work, I am not trying salt....any ideas?
#81 - motherinneed - 09/12/2009 - 23:29
There is actually a Rx called Swish and Spit that heals and comforts...It consists of Benadryl, Mylanta and Lidocaine. Obviously you can't pick up the lidocaine but swishing equals parts of Mylanta and Benadryl will truly heal.Benadryl helps with the inflamation (also providing a bit of numbness). For pediatric patients, you could try dabbing the above mixture directly on the ulcer with a swab. Afterall, thats the idea is getting the ulcers in contact with the solution...you should swish at least 3 times a day or more.

#86 - mama - 09/25/2009 - 11:49

I've been dying for a week with hundreds of these things. My tongue has a white coating on it as well. Tried everything. This morning I decided to mix baking soda with water and try that. It seems to be a natural anestetic. Also, the coating is going away and that is within 2 hours and many rinses and gargles. Anyway, worth a try.

I have just been reading through all the home remedy suggestions. I have large very painful ulcer on roof of mouth for past 3 days. Have used salt washes and Kenalong meds from Chemist, with no great success. Have just tried the 3 - 4 drops of Tree Tree Oil in glass of luke warm water ............ instant relief. Thanks for the heads up, everyone.

Mix a little bit of unsulphured molasses and cream of tartar.
Stings a little bit, but eliminates pain in a minute or so (:

I suggest you get Molkosan - from your local Health Shop. It is a great cure for any mouth problems. Dilute it in a glass of water and rinse around your mouth. It tastes like vinegar but I used it last night and already my mouth ulcer on roof of my mouth feels so much better.
#97 - Hazel - 10/28/2009 - 06:37
Okay. Just a quick follow up. Umm battery acid will be absorbed into your bloodstream and in even 0.002 microgram small doses can do permenant damage. Anything larger than 0.002 - can kill you. Google it.
It liquifys your capillaries first and then progresses to full and unstoppable internal bleeding. Please guys don't do it. I have severe pain and looking at any of these remidies brings tears. With my entire mouth one continual ulcer swilling benadryl (yes you'll cry) but you can eat a soft meal (corn kernals swallowed whole) I haven't eaten in over 3 days. I got the mouth ulcers in the morning,I applied a pinch of salt on it.It was terribly pain for a few seconds, but in the evening all the ulcers were gone. This remedy is working for some people and may be not for some due to different health condition, but it's not wrong to try.

for mouth ulcer take folic acid tab twice a day with vitamin b and for pain use disprin for gargle. if not ask ur doctor for silver nitrate

Thank god it's over. Haven't slept properly in two days. Jaw starting to swell. Tired iodine wash, asprin dissolved nearby in mouth, paracetamol, and then read the tee tree oil method here. Had some in the medicine cabinet by chance. Damn it, it works! Within 2 mins! Two drops into a large tea/coffee mug of warm water, swish it around for a minute and spit. Done. amazing! It smells meaner than it tastes, infact you can't taste it at all. Mucho thanks to aromatherpy person.

Kenalog in orabase is really good, I bought some about 10 mins ago, applyed it in my car outside the chemist, its a thick paste but its really good, I can eat and drink now, and has a type of steroid that reduces swelling =3
#104 - jamz - 11/27/2009 - 16:59
I agree Kenalog is the best but you have to apply it when you feel the ulcer coming on. If the ulcer does break try tea tree antiseptic oil on the ulcer. Tastes grose but will work!

I get mouth ulcers frequently. Reasons i was told are constipation, tension and body heat besides lack of vitamin B. I have been taking vitamin B complex capsules 3 times a week and that i found prevents reoccurence. however when i stop for 2 weeks i get them again. There are gels available by Dr. Reddys and Ranbaxy which when applied acts as an antiseptic and [@]gesic on ulcers and helps cure. drink lots of water.

It's 11:47pm Australian Eastern Standard time, I'm sitting at my computer with all these 'remedies' ready to use them, because these ulcers have come at a really bad time
From past experience, salt works really well (for me anyway). The inflamation generally lowers extremely quickly (within minutes), and generally isnt painful for the remainder of the time. The ulcer itself usually sits there idley for another 24-48hrs, but it doesnt irritate very much at all (just a slight tingling sensation).
Vegemite might actually have a some use :| :O ... that's a first.
Okay, Vegemite officially stings like a B****
Thanks to all the help everyone, and i hope you don't suffer too much.
Peace out from Melbourne, Australia :P
(stick with the salt ;))

The salt hurts like hell as does the bicarb of soda direct on the ulcer (i havent tried it diluted tho, might give that a go after reading some comments). A cold teabag on the ulcer gives instant temporay relief...and I tried the corrainder seeds boiled in a little water and used as a mouth wash which also gives relief ahhhhhhhhh. The best thing i have tried is bonjela ONCE. Bit pricey at about £8 for two applications..stings like u wouldnt believe but after 20 secs the pain is COMPLETELY gone! Would recommend for really severe ulcers!! :-)

Let us go why them come, to get best of the cure. You may be having constipation. You may not be having cleared stool. I do have such problem. I start taking laxative pills every alternate night for happy morning. I also take every morning and night pills of BECOZINK. You may be thinking ,"OH I have no problem of constipation" Remember. everybody of you may be having at least 30% retaintion of stool, which decomposes and gets bad breath(otherwise where it comes from?). Just take two pills of "Dulcolax" every alternate day at night, and tell me. Avoid less sleep.Use listrine as a mouth wash.

Go to your Doctor and ask for a script for MINOCYCLINE capsules.
Break one open and mix with a small amount of water to make a thick paste - don't make it runny or too watery!!
Using a cotton bud or blunt tooth pick, apply the paste to the ulcer. Suprisingly it will get a very good grip on the ulcer and will not wash off! All the same, avoid hot or cold drinks for a couple of hours to make sure it adheres
One capsule lasts for about 5 - 6 applications. Ulcer will disappear in a couple of days. Preferably apply it the instant you suspect or can first see the developing ulcer.
Lemme know if you have success with it:

#122 - Ben - 12/28/2009 - 00:55
I used to get mouth ulcers all the time when I was young. It sounds a bit far fetched but back then I used a particular pressure point to cure them. The first couple of times using this method I'd still get the ulcer but no pain. After that they stopped and went for about 10 years without having any!! The last year or so I have had a few, but I've been sick a bit and they seem to rear their ugly head whenever I am run down or stressed out.. I'm gonna take my own advice next time I'm feeling run down..
If you start to feel run down, or accidentally bite the inside of your mouth and don't want a painful ulcer:
Get a sharp pencil. (Or a pen if you don't mind drawing on yourself.
Place the point of the pencil in the crease/joint between the base of your middle finger and your palm on the inside of your hand.
Apply pressure and slightly twist/grind (for lack of better words) the pencil for 30 seconds to a minute.
While you are applying pressure close your mouth and move your tongue along your teeth in a circular motion (tongue between lip and teeth).
Repeat on other hand.
You may look a little silly while doing this. But it takes 2 minutes, it's natural, it's free, and it may work! The mind is a powerful thing!
This worked for me and my father. He used to see naturopaths, homeopaths etc back then. Think that's where he was told of this method!
#123 - Janet - 12/28/2009 - 02:57
luke warm salty water def. soothes it, but i'm not sure about healing it, i'll have to just wait and see!
but i find jello/jelly soothes it too! no harm trying it though!

I have had the best luck with a mouth wash called peroxyl. The dental hygenist suggested it to me when she saw an ulcer in my mouth. She also suggested mixing equal parts peroxide and water.
For everyone out there with recurring mouth ulcers. Please, go to the doctor and get checked out. These ulcers are a sign that there is something very wrong with your immune system. I have lupus which causes mine.

Oh joy, I have an ulcer right on the skin part that attaches the lip to the lower gum and it hurts soo much. Have no idea what to try first... I tried baking soda and that did not work, I am using colgate toothpaste, could that be what is aggrevating the ulcer?:-o

Mouth Ulcers / Aaphthous Ulcers are lesions caused in the mucous membrane of the mouth and lips. They could be located anywhere inside the mouth, under the tongue or at the base of the gums. They can be very painful and can make eating and talking difficult. They develop due to various reasons, like trauma, infection, drugs, deficiencies or any medical condition. Research in natural therapies has paved the way for effective treatment of this condition. They provide relief from the acute pain and swelling caused due to ulceration of the oral mucosa.* They also speed up the healing process, thereby preventing any secondary infection.* Supplemented by vitamins and minerals they address the nutritional deficiencies that are a common cause of aphthous ulcers.* Customers report a marked reduction in relapses of ulcers after taking natural therapies. Similar protocols are provided by Biogetica.

Ambisol liquid numbs the area and relieves the pain for a while. So you can at least get something to eat. And be pain free for a bit. Face it, your going to have to waite them out, but this does help.
#135 - Bonnie - 02/12/2010 - 23:17
Salt stings like a son of a b****, but it works well. The first time is undoubtedly the worst, but within a minute or two there's a noticeable improvement. Depending on how bad the ulcer is you may need to apply the salt more than once, but nothing will hurt as bad as the first.
After you apply the salt the pain won't be completely gone, but it'll come down to being more of a nuisance than anything excruciating. Totally worth it.
#136 - J - 02/15/2010 - 19:44
okay, i have been getting these things every single month, 4 or more at a time for almost two years now. it's ridiculous. no one can help me get rid of them permanently. i've been to tons of doctors but nothing.
i find salt & lukewarm water does help temporarily with pain but the ulcer still takes a week almost to go away.
i'm getting my braces off tomorrow, and i have 3 in my mouth. idk how they r gonna be able to take my braces off cause i cant open my mouth hardly. pray for me please.
#137 - Scarlett - 02/15/2010 - 20:06
There's stuff you can get called orasedjel. It's AMAZING!! Tastes like strawberry and you get it from the local chemist in australia. I've had braces for 3 years and it's stood by me every single time. Just rub some on (5 secs of pain max) and a bonus it's Great for kids too!!!!

I always get ulcers in my mouth. But the salt really make me mad. Long time ago, i tried watermelon frost before. It works! BUT... Few days ago, i had an ulcer in my mouth. It is really big. So i try to use the watermelon frost again. But it seems useless to me now :-( My sister suggest me to apply some salt on it. but i refuse to use salt anymore coz the salt really make me crazy.
Now my mouth is still painful. What can i do?? :-(
#140 - yen - 02/19/2010 - 12:38
I'm glad I've found this page as I had a lot of probs with my mouth for a week now and thought it was the beginning of a cold as i often get similar symptoms that are -pain in teeth, gums, jaw, and feels like swallowed a pepper pot.
Never realised it could be something else until I had a feel around today and discovered a huge lump.
At this moment, I've got a dry teabag in the mouth, earlier on gargling with salt. Will try the tea tree later.
One thing I must point out, earlier in the week I spent 2 days rubbing and pressing all over my hands, feet, ears and face - sort of like reflexology and did what one of the earlier posters suggested, in between the thumb and forefinger. The pain seemed to disappear completely on the 3rd day but since then I haven't done it again properly and the pain has re-appeared with a vengeance.
I wonder if it all started because I had a binge on salt and vinegar crisps and cakes - something I rarely eat normally.
Hope you all get better.
#141 - Anglea - 02/20/2010 - 14:08
I know this has already been posted several times but I thought I would too, just to verify (I have trouble trusting the internet too). I first tried a small amount of table salt directly onto the ulcer, it hurt like a mother but after one or two minutes the pain faded a bit and the swelling decreased. Still unsatisfied, I swished warm salt water around my mouth 3 times in quick succession. It didn't hurt as much as the first time, but when I'd finished I could barely see the ulcer anymore and the pain was almost gone.
It only seems to work as a temporary remedy but I thought I'd clarify that salt does help. Hope this helps you guys too.
P.S. Was anyone actually stupid enough to try battery acid?
#142 - Link - 02/21/2010 - 17:38
Here is a genuine cure but you must be careful not to swallow. Use a Q-tip to rough up the sore which will bring tears to your eyes then take a piece of copper sulfate approximately 1/8 inch diameter and place it on the sore. Let the stone set for a few seconds touching the entire sore. extract the stone and rinse your mouth with fresh water. Healing will begin immediately . usually one application will suffice

I'M AMAZED anybody suggested strychnine as a permanent solution to all life's ills? After, all, we have had peroxide, battery-acid and misuse of various and potentially lethal chemicals!
It seems to me that the remedies create bigger problems than the Mouth ulcers!!
For God's (whatever,or whoever you perceive Her to be) DO NOT TRY THE strychnine - (though I suspect some iron-headed idiot will come up with a non-fatal use for it!). DO NOT BELIEVE THEM- IT IS A CERTAIN KILLER AND IS OUTLAWED, ILLEGAL!!! AND WILL KILL YOU VERY VERY DEAD.
Now, is that little mouth ulcer really so bad?

Just drink lots and lots of water for just 2 days and ulcers are gone!
#148 - abc - 02/28/2010 - 23:16
For sure go with the salt. For me salt works best in water. Get you a glass of water and keep mixing in salt untill the water becomes saturated. Take large gulps of the solution and swish in mouth untill the water becomes warm. Spit it out and take another gulp. In all honesty this process takes about 20 minutes, althought it does not hurt, and by the end of the "treatment" you can noticeably see a reduction in the redness and inflamation. and the pain will have also subsided. Do this times a day at least (no upper limit, you cant hurt youself) and the ulcer/sore will be gone in 48 to 72 hours.
#149 - ab - 03/04/2010 - 23:08
cream of tartar rubbed onto the sore, complimented by vit B & C,there you go,baby....yes from a nutritional point of view different remedies wil work for different patients-but this one is the most general cause for the origon of the sore.

Isn't it a smaller world when others have similar problems?
Not that I wish an ulcer upon anyone, but so good to know I am not alone!
Okay---I am not a newbie to this issue, and can tell you that my cousin put me onto Hydrogen Peroxide 2%...dilute 1-2 caps with 20mls warm water for a 'rinse'...do this 3 times a day everyday!
When that fails, I use salt dabbed directly onto the sore, followed by a warm salt-water rinse...I agree with the Vegemite and has been suggested everyday we should try eating a whole teaspoon of the wonderful aussie spread to keep these nasties 'at bay'...[the vitamin B theory]...and it helps!
I have used Kenalog many times, but ran out...
I had never heard of the Garlic/Olive oil remedy, but gave it a go earlier today to get some relief..well, it DID numb the pain, but sadly the rotten scoundrel remains! I think it's all a matter of "courses for horses"...wish you ALL the best to be pain-free!

Yeah, it's me again. Anyway, if it stays, see your doctor if you have mouth ulcers that:
Are larger than 1 cm or you have lots of small ulcers join together to form a large ulcer.
Do not heal within 3-4 weeks even with treatment.
Occur often in a very short space of time, e.g. every 1 -2 weeks.
Come with a sore throat, or rash on any part of your body
Are not painful at all
Occur with diarrhoea as well
I copied this. Sorry...!:-(

>-( both of us(mother and daughter) has very bad pain from mouth ulsars.
we are using honey until we go to the store and get bi-carb soda and t-tree oil
- we will liet you know how it goes once we have tried theses things.
DO NOT USE: salt-that will only spread the ulsars.
grr while im tryping this my mouth ulsars are hurting soo bad ive got about 6 or 7
i really hope this rx works!
#163 - pain! - 04/14/2010 - 02:04
we have found the cure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:-D
apply t-tree oil neat onto ulsar with a cotton bud-do this several times a day. this stings like crazy at first but after about 30 second it went away and you cannot feel any pain what so ever!
we also put a few frop od t-tree into a cup and then filled up the cup with water drink and swish this around your mouth for about 30seconds-this is effective but ony lasts about 5 mins. so i would say use the first idea(put t-tree straight onto tongue) this lasted me no-pain for the whole night and the mornong! i am so happy :)
#164 - pain! - 04/14/2010 - 18:50
Salt water my ASS! Salt water takes the pain away and puts it in your STOMACH! Could make you puke. Get TRIAMCINOLONE it works overnight. If it's in the back of your throat, drink hot ginger tea w/ honey
#165 - Justin - 04/16/2010 - 00:22
Actually i dont get any relife from that, there i one simple medicine and price is also less.it is candid mouthpaint. still suffering from last 3 year.
#166 - Debasish das - 04/18/2010 - 06:35
Tawas crystal (alum) put on the ulcer and the next 2 hours the pain will gone and the following it will be cured.
#167 - tawas - 04/20/2010 - 12:38
Get powdered Alum and put directly on sore. It will sting for a few moments, but the ulcer will be gone the within 24 hours.
#168 - jdw022160 - 04/20/2010 - 21:29
Finally em gona try salt tomorrow.. Get back to you guys afer 2 applications...
#169 - Majid - 04/21/2010 - 15:55
Take a match and burn it for 5 seconds, let it cool and then place it on the sore. It stings really bad at first but they heal up within a few days and pain goes away fast.
#170 - Dre - 04/21/2010 - 20:25
i know the best what you should do is to put vinigar and oil in your mouth and swish it around or take mayo and tamato sause together or take the coffee powder and put it on the ulcers or even take a luke warm water and add a half a teaspoon of salt and suger so it does not hurt so badly works for me so it will work for you. good luck and hope you get the ulcers away.
#171 - holly - 04/22/2010 - 13:40
I tried putting some salt on ulcer...initially the pain was very high but then after few seconds when i removed salt, the white skin from ulcer removed with salt and it bleed just two three drops... i hv applied twice after few hours...now ulcer is red and pain is less than before...lets c how soon it will heal...
Conclusion:- Salt is good option rather than any mouth sores gel..
#172 - Majid - 04/22/2010 - 19:01
ok, ive tried salt, have done at least 3 times a day for the last 3-4 days, it seems to mislead you that its working, in actuall fact my ulcer has gotten to be twice the size! its now a bit bigger than the end of a pencil (and yes hurts!) i asked a pharmacist one day whats good for ulcers and he suggested that i gargle aspro clear! i tried that to but days and days later that remedy seems to do nothing either! i just put vegemite on it before, (15mins ago) it does hurt to the point where you make funny faces and tend to drool, but i can definately say that its halfed the pain, plus you sort of know what your in for with the next application!
im definately going to try the t tree oil in water thing, that has to be a winner as far as i can see from the above comments, as i have read them all!
there are some pretty radical natural and un-natural treatments listed here, and all i can say is that, holy crap! some of you people really have twisted remedies, battery acid??? rough it with a cue tip???? bloody hell!
stick with the vegiemite, it definately will help you anyway, and try the t tree!
#173 - fezman - 04/23/2010 - 15:29
I just tried the toothpaste thing and its really worked. it stung like hell for a few seconds but its the most releif Ive felt in 3 days. i also tried the listirine that didnt work and corsodyl gel which they say is specifically for ulcers - that doesnt work either. my home remedy is dab a bit of toothpaste on it - the relief is great aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh
#174 - Sarah - 04/28/2010 - 06:58

Sorry but you guys have no idea what the pain from a mouth ulcer is....You have one eh. Well I just went through having all my teeth pulled on top. Then a tempory plate put right into my mouth as soon as they were done pulling them. You are put to sleep while this is happening ...The oral surgeon also gives you shots in your mouth, gums and so forth. Waking up was no pain at all..
BUT WHEN THE SHOTS WORE OFF "OUCH". everywhere he gave me a shot has an ulcer which is 10 places. the one over my left eye tooth area is the size of a dime and now remember I have this huge thing with teeth on it in my mouth. The place the plate touches the most??? yea thats right...The only thing I know of helping the pain and man do I know what that is...DEMEROL
..but for home remedies the salt water rinses are the best...and cold pack to help reduce the swelling and the best of all oral jel...oh I do brush with sysodyne maximum....yes even the false teeth too...it helps the gums too....Good luck all
#178 - getting older - 05/30/2010 - 19:57
put table salt on it before going to sleep.. gone the next day.. cooollll!!!
#179 - AD - 06/01/2010 - 20:15
The best thing for a mouth ulcer is a little cum. Just [@] (or get somone to do it for you) into a cup, then apply it to your mouth 8 times daily.
#180 - . - 06/07/2010 - 17:55
WOW! The cum works great! probably the best thing I've ever tried... The ulcer disappeared in 3-4 minutes!
It doesn't hurt at all AND it tastes great!
#181 - Sarah - 06/07/2010 - 18:00
WELL FOLKS TRY GUAVE LEAVES ...BOIL IT AND HAVE IT AFTER IT COOLS DOWN.....WORKED FOR ME..:-D...GET WELL SOON...:-)
#182 - Nimi - 06/16/2010 - 03:13
soo can someone explain the salt on the ulcer thing?
because right now i'm putting salt on the ulcer, waiting, putting more salt, waiting, and then finally rinsing my mouth out 5 minutes later, but it doesnt seem to help at all! it looks bigger! am i doing it wrong?
#183 - Moak - 06/17/2010 - 01:08
Although it does hurt like hell, I cover the ulcer with salt, let it torture the crap outta me, then I scrub the crap out of it with the toothbrush. I then rinse with some warm salty water a a few times. Usually it's gone with-in 24 hours.
It does hurt like crazy, so prepare yourself, but it usually numbs it for when you apply the toothbrush.
#184 - Ashley - 06/17/2010 - 06:31
First of all thanks for lots of suggestion some are easy and works...
I think smyle gel is the worst solution even it increses pain.. the best solution is have mouth wash with a good mouth wash solution and at night before going to bed have salt+luke water gargals trust me it really work....
#185 - Abhishek- india - 06/17/2010 - 07:36
I got my wisdom teeth out last week and was put on a combination of anti inflamatory (ibroprofen) tablets, painkillers and corsodyl mouthwash by the dentist.
All was going great and my pain was decreasing and mouth heeling for a few days. Then one morning I woke up with a very severe dose of mouth ulcers....at this stage I counted 10 all around my tongue and back of my mouth..painful!
I did a bit of research and noticed that the anti-inflamatory tablets that I was perscribed for the swelling have been known to cause mouth ulcers so I stopped taking them. Since stopping taking them I haven't really noticed much change with the ulcers but to be honest I don't want to take the chance of getting any more.
To date I have been using corsodyl mouthwash (which says on the label that it treats mouthwash). Ive used this twice daily as recommended but haven't found any change. It doesn't even cause the ulcer to sting.
I have also been gargling and putting salt straight on to the ulcer - very painful but I don't think it's providing any relief. I have just gargelled with biocarbonate soda and water and again very painful, seems to have given my mouth a feeling of being coated but i'm still feeling the pain.
At this stage I just want them to go, just can't stand the pain anymore why can't there just be an easy solution.
#186 - KT - 06/24/2010 - 11:11
Your not going to believe this but my mother is obsessed with recommending Manuka Honey for all sorts of ailments and problems. Normally I just laugh at her as she recommends it for absolutely everything, but as I was running out of options to get rid of the mouth ulcers I said why not give it a go.
At the moment I have ulcers all over my mouth, I just put a spoon of the honey in my mouth making sure to coat all the ulcers and tried to leave it in my mouth for as long as possible before swallowing and bingo my ulcers have stopped stinging. I would say within 10 minutes of putting the manuka honey in my mouth the stinging stopped. I'm not sure if it's actually going to get rid of them, but it's definitely numbd the pain for a while.
#187 - KT - 06/24/2010 - 12:27
OMG! The ulcers were numbed by the honey but they weren't going away so I tried another persons suggestion above... and it's the best thing i ever tried.
I gave my boy friend a nice blow job and instead of spitting or swallowing the cum.. I kept it in my mouth for the rest of the day, guess what?
THEY COMPLETELY DISAPPEARED!
#188 - KT - 06/24/2010 - 18:01
try one up on salt and place raw garlic 3 times a day, it stings like crazy, but it works. I did it a few months ago. All the best
#189 - Michelle - 06/30/2010 - 07:42
here is four things to help deal with the pain
difflam mouth gel (for fast relief of painful conditions in the mouth) it is an anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial.
lignocaine gel- comes in a 20g tube from most pharmacies and it is basically an anesthesia for the mouth and has good results.
kenalog in orabase- used specifically for mouth ulcers.. not painful on application but best to wait a little bit before eating after putting it on ulcers.
seda lotion- apply with cotton tips to affected area, doesnt taste too bad and helps alot with making u able to eat and drink after a few minutes it numbs the ulcer.
if u need any more info email to: firstname.lastname@example.org

I had ulcers for 1-2 years, tried every thing from medicine to butter to salt but didn't worked. Finally my Granny asked me to drink very hot water before going to bed. I drank hot water for 3-5 nights and ulcers never came back.
Drinking very Hot water smells bad but was very very effective.
#192 - Anand - 07/13/2010 - 03:22
HONEY IS VERY MUCH EFFECTIVE, APPLY DIRECT TO THE AFFECTED AREA ITS REALY WORKS....:-):-P
#193 - Amal - 07/13/2010 - 09:05
Only just read about toothpastes being a possible link to re-ocurring oral ulcers. Any toothpaste containing the ingredient sodium lauryl sulfate should be avoided because it is a detergent that dries out the mouth leaving the lining vulnerable to attack from acidic foods. I am currently trying out a Tea Tree Oil mouthwash made by Desert Essence for ulcers I've had for a week now. Today is day two and I'm finding some relief. It tastes good and contains ingredients such as oil of spearmint, aloe and witch hazel. There's no alchohol so theres no sting and you can use it as often as you like. I'm also trying another product called Canker Care+, an herbal gel to relieve pain and it's made by Quantum. It's made with Lysine and 12 other healing herbs. It leaves a very cooling sensation to the affected area. I like it. My ulcers have been re-ocurring for a year now and are related to my pain level.... surgery related. The ulcers last anywhere from a week to more than three weeks. I've tried many remedies this past year and these two products I've shared today are by far the best I've tried so far.... and all natural. I wish I could say it stops the pain but it does make it more bearable. I will know better in a few more days as to their effectiveness overall. Hope this helps?

Dry it out - if its on your tongue stick it out, or hold your lip out or whatever so the air can dry it out and dont let any more saliva get on it.
Once its pretty much completely dry hold it like that for a minute or so then just leave it.
Temporary relief of pain and also I swear it speeds up the healing process.
Works for me every. single. time.
And best of all its FREE! :)
#198 - HCY - 07/26/2010 - 05:04
My great grandmother used Alum (its a pickling spice) so i gave it a try and it numbed it for awhile but it was 2 times bigger the next day. Something that actually works if you have access to it and can be a man about it is moonshine. Swish the shine in your mouth until you can no longer hold it. Warning... it burns like a mother!! it will be healed within a day. I guess im going to have to break out the ol' medicine bottle! :-
#199 - Ben - 07/26/2010 - 16:08
smile gel is of no use, pure wastage of money, well all the above discusion has no result,u wl only have to wait just avoid spicy food

Apply salt then bicarb soda then betadine and sm-33 or bonjella and repeat the process. It will hurt like hell but will numb it.. by morning you should have much less pain. This has worked for me, goodluck!

ive got a mouth ulcer right now and ive literally just tried the vegemite idea from 'hello' do not try it people it is sooooooooo sore, i tried cos it seemed handy cos we have some vegemite in the cupboard but it was awful
#207 - alix - 09/04/2010 - 10:42
ive also tried the salt idea, it hurts so bad i washed it off with some water, but then tried it again with a little more salt (accidently) and hurt worse so washed off quite quickly too. i hope it works!
#208 - alix - 09/04/2010 - 11:18
i am 15 years old and i get mouth ulcers quite regularily. i have a grandmother who is very big on home rememdies. whenever i get ulcers i cut up a lemon and dip it in salt and suck the juice out of it. now it does hurt. a lot. but i eat the whole lemon and the next day they are gone. :-)
#209 - Kayla - 09/11/2010 - 09:23
OMG some of these comments!! Actually took my mind a little of my awful pain. I have a huge ulcer on my tongue which coincided with having 5 fillings!!! I don't even think I needed the fillings and I wasn't in any pain before my visit to the dentist. I am a relief teacher in Australia and the poor children really got the brunt of my pain today. Still they'll get the last laugh as I wont be able to go into school tomorrow judging on the pain now. Just swallowed a load of vegemite and gargling with salt. Hope that works!
I broke 6 bones last year in 2 terrible separate accidents... but the pain fromthis one huge ulcer is worse. I really feel for you guys who get them regularly and I've had tears running down my face, (while I've been poking my tongue out,to let it dry out) for you.
Hopefully we'll all be better soon!
#210 - Kathy - 09/16/2010 - 11:02
After 45 years of suffering frequent and painful mouth ulcers I eventually found something that works for me. I lost interest long before in the "magic potions" suggested by every well meaning person. I eventually found something that eliminates the pain in a day or so, followed by healing over another week or two, depending on the size of the ulcer. The thing that works for me is a combination of zinc, vitamins C & B6 and a smidgeon of a few other compounds that may, or may not, be important.
Zinc and vitamins never made any difference by themselves but taken together there is some sort of synergy that actually works for me. The product I use that has these compounds in combination is "Zinc Fix", which is distributed in Australia by Ethical Nutrients.
I told a few other chronic ulcer sufferers about this and they got the same result. It has worked for both males and females.
Now as soon as I feel my mouth getting sore (you ulcer sufferers will know the tingle I'm talking about) I take a half a teaspoon of the Zinc Fix powder mixed in a glass of water. In a day or so my mouth is fine again.
The experts should know about this but every doctor I consulted could only suggest the same old home remedies I had tried a hundred times before.
If you are a chronic ulcer sufferer I recommend you give it a try. It certainly improved my quality of life.
#211 - Rolf - 09/18/2010 - 00:57
I have found that placing a plain asprin directly on the ulcer and letting it dissolve is the best relief I can find. It takes the immediate pain away and helps the ulcer clear up quite quickly.
#212 - Ladyyyy - 09/22/2010 - 12:25
Help i put battery acids on my ulcer and now its melting my lip help please wat do i do.
#213 - helpbatteryacid - 09/24/2010 - 04:05
@#215: go see a doctor. Rinse your mouth with lots of water to get rid as much battery acid as possible. And then go consult the doctor. Never put an alkali like bicarbonate of soda on it, it'll probably burn your mouth out. And of course, don't put battery acid again -.-
#214 - Lowfreq - 09/28/2010 - 07:26
@215. Milk will counteract the acid. but please dont do it again.
I used to suffer ulcers for two weeks every month, when I went off the injection, and stopped taking other forms of contraceptives, I always had a feeling that my body fluids were acidic and were attacking me.
I haven't suffered any until this week, and I had forgotten all the remedies I used to try to acheive a moments reprieve from this hell, so I am glad to have found this page. because, damn I forgotten how bad it can be.
Vit B, Zinc and Iron deficency... is always the main culprit, so back to the pill bottles and rebuild immunity.
Funny how one can be stressed out so much that one does not notice that one is stressed. bloody viscious cycle, but the only real truth of a mouth ulcer is stress and a breakdown of immunity, that the body is actually eating away at itself.
ps. " what is eating away at me, that I have not voiced out loud". Clearing the air, can clear the pain.
#215 - oxoxs - 09/29/2010 - 22:04
ooops, im so onto it I forgot my remedy for you.
in a teapot put a teaspoon of basil (mixed herbs if you dont have straight basil, as thyme, majorium are just as healing) and 1/2 teaspoon of cloves (whole or powder is fine) bring water to nearly boiling (boiling kills all the nutrients), 2 cups of water, let it sit as you would tea, strain into a jar that can live in the fridge.
Use as a mouth gargle as often as required, generally every 3hours. the herbs aid to heal and disinfect , the cloves is the ultimate pain relief.
No burning holes in your mouth, or pain when you gargle. Honest relief. at no expense or docts visits.
#216 - oxoxs - 09/29/2010 - 23:15
I have ulcers every 2 weeks or so and they stay for a week at least. this has been happening for at least 10 years now. here are my observations:
Fresh lime soda has always helped me
drink lots of water
dont have chocolates
dont have spicy food
dont have coffee (not sure about tea)
people who think smile gel is good, think again, it [@] big big time.
#217 - chamunda - 10/04/2010 - 07:39
Also as a tip,
I was recommended to take 2 aspirin tablets disolved in lukewarm water and gargle this to help relieve pain and hopefully reduce them in size. I am suffering from chicken pox and subsequently have mouth and throat ulcers.
And does vitamin E help at all?
Im 15, all help appreciated
#218 - :) - 10/07/2010 - 11:40
;-)i will try salt method , thks for your feedback , thks once again
#219 - bhavik - 10/07/2010 - 13:22
For those who have frequent ulcers or bad ones and tried almost "everything" I suggest you get METRANIDAZOLE tablets(from your doctor), crush them, apply them on your ulcers with a q-tip (damp q-tips) and let it stay there for as long as possible. Put it on during nighttime and it'll be gone in the morning. Trust me, it works.
#220 - Soo Min - 10/11/2010 - 05:31
Take alum powder mixed with water and gargle, it will strech the throat part a little but as an astringent it will heal the mouth ulcer, also make sure you take folic acid supplements and b6 and b12 capsules, drink lots of water, keep your stomach clean, and take isabgol, psyllium husk every night with water. constipation, stress, indigestion, depression, spicy food are a few causes.
#221 - Amit - 10/15/2010 - 01:44
A VERY IMPORTANT ADVICE-
DON'T USE ANY TOOTHPASTE THAT HAS SODIUM LAURLY SULPHATE (SLS) IN IT, THEY ARE THE MAJOR CAUSES FOR A MOUTH ULCER OR DON'T LET THEM HEAL EASILY, MAKE SURE YOU USE A HERBAL TOOTHPASTE AS THEY HAVE ASTRINGENT QUALITIES AND ARE COMPLETELY SAFE.
#222 - Amit - 10/15/2010 - 01:48
I feel for you all as I currently have about ten ulcers myself on my lips and inside my mouth along with a disgusting cold sore on my chin!!! Attractive eh? please fellas, join and orderly queue!!! I have had these bastards for a week now - first time in my life and I'm not about to get attatched to them!!! After reading all your helpful comments and using Bonjela and Paw Paw cream all week I have just tried the Bicarbonate Soda and water paste and although it is stinging like hell I am determined to leave it on them (the external ulcers on lips and coldsores on chin) all night and pray for a drastic improvement come morning!!
I shall report back!! Wish me luck!! Sweet dreams and sweet healing to us all!!! What a club to be in eh?!?!
#223 - gaz - 10/16/2010 - 06:42
Well i'm back, slept the whole night in excruciating pain due to Bicarbonate Soda on my sores - really not sure but can't say that it did any good to be honest.
Today my lovely sister bought me round some OralMedic which hurt like a bitch to put on but worked temporarily for a while.
So now on anti biotics called Roxide and praying for sweet relief. Or death - whichever comes first!!!
So - the search goes on.
Although NEVER intend on having this again!!
Good luck to all!!

hi,i m sufferin from mouth ulcers from last 5 days...it often happen with me.....i read some of the tips in this site..and i m goin to try something today.....but the cooments about some of the remedies given above has confused me...
#225 - pratibha - 10/20/2010 - 00:20
Well, I have tried Bonjela, and it hurts like crazy. I am now currently using Oral-Aid. It makes the ulcer numb and unfortunately the part of my mouth that touches the Oral-Aid numb too. But it works. Before I put on Oral-Aid, I gurgle with hot water(not THAT hot) and then with salt water. After that, I immediately rub on Oral-Aid a couple of times. :-D:-D:-D
#226 - Adlin - 10/27/2010 - 07:26
take salt with warm water and gargle 3 times a day...
#227 - harry - 11/02/2010 - 01:49
i dont know if this board is australian... but putting vegemite on an ulcer REALLY helps.
it stings like hell, but afterwards it numbs it.
plus vegemite is full of vitamin B. a lack of vitamin B is what apparently causes ulcers.
and it's salty... so it works similarly to warm salty water at the same time.
vegemite works for me.
i don't know if america has vegemite... i think there's something like marmite that's similar?
p.s. being an aussie, i'm not really meant to say this, but it tastes like crap... it's worth it when the ulcer is gone though.

I finally have no ulcers after a month or more suffering... when my daughter started to get them also I thought this has to be something we both have been doing not something physically wrong... Colgate Tartar control toothpaste. because of the ulcers I was cleaning my teeth about 6 times a day, we stopped using it and the very next day no ulcers. (this product contains both SSL and Baking soda.)

Anbesol is a great pain reliever and will clear up your ulcer within a few days, ive been suffering from ulcers for all my life so far, and i recently found anbesol which relieves the pain EPICLY and will get rid of ulcers. It will sting slightly when you dab it onto your ulcer. You can use it upto 8 times a day, you just dab a bit on your fingertip and apply it to your mouth ulcer. I hope this helped, because its worth a fiver for what it does! :-)

Thank you sulphuric acid!!!!!!! I have suffered for years with mouth ulcers from my Lupus, and recently got two that have prevented me from eating and drinking for a week. I applied a new product from the pharmacy that contains sulphuric acid and although I cried while applying it, I ate my first meal in days 15 minutes later. Today the swelling on my lip and under my tongue has reduced, and I am currently enjoying a cup of coffee. Finally something that actually works!!!!!

I have a PAINFUL mouthsore on my gums in the front below my lower teeth. I acidentally stabbed myself while brushing and have had a hole in my guns for the past several days - so it is an injury, not an infection. Since I am at work, the only thing I have access to at the moment is salt so I decided to try it based on a lot of suggestions here. I poured a bunch of salt into my lower lip area and let it sit. Holy sh*t does it hurt! Then, after a few minutes, I took a sip of water and swished it around for a minute and spit it out. It made my gums feel a little swollen but believe it or not, the pain has subsided. I can definitely still feel pain, but it isn't as bad as it was a few minutes ago. I'm sure it will only be temporary but at least the pain has subsided enough for me to eat my salad...I'm starving! Thanks for the tip!

TRY APPLYING TEA TREE OIL!!!
IT REALLY HELPED ME!!! IT MAY HELP YOU!!!
I read all the comments here a few days ago after I had been suffering with (well only) two ulcers, a very large one underneath my upper lip and a very painful smaller one at the front of my tongue.
A few of the comments above mentioned using tea tree oil so I gave that a go as I had some in the bathroom. Within seconds of applying it I could open my mouth and talk which I couldn't do before ( It just hurt to much to talk! )
I had been applying salt, baking soda, ice, and a product called Frador onto the ulcers.
All of them hurt to some degree when applying them.
The tea tree oil - to me anyway, had no discomfort whatsoever when applied and I felt an instant degree of relief!
I followed what a few of the above comments had prescribed:
1. Make a lukewarm water mouthrinse with a few drops of tea tree oil and gargle that for half a minute or more.
2. Use a cotton bud/cotton swab dipped into the tea tree oil and apply it directly to the ulcers.
I felt much more relief than the other methods I had been using - not just recently but for years ( like others here I've experienced ulcers many times over the years! ).
Appying tea tree oil hurt the least yet gave the greatest amount of relief so I began applying it regularly and would do the whole "mouthrinse and then apply direct to the ulcer" treatment before bed - after brushing my teeth and then first thing in the morning.
I'd also apply it direct to the ulcers throughout the day when it's effect would wear off and the ulcer pain would grow again.
It really has made a big difference ( for me! ) in terms of relief and healing.
I just thought I'd leave this comment in case it helps someone else to try it and hopefully gain some relief like I did!
So a BIG, BIG thanks and much appreciation to the people who left comments #44, #89, #91, #102, #165 and #193 - You've just helped me and my mouth experience a lot less pain!!

ECHINECEA. A Wonder herb for all acute inflammatory conditions. (liquid echinecea available in chemist and health food shop) Mild in nature, take every 2 hours, then taper off to 3 times a day for another week. Usually works within 3 days. Eat simple soups and rice or other porridge. If worried about zinc deficiency (zinc helps the body prevent infections) look for white spots on the ring and pinky fingers. This is a sure sign of zinc deficiency. Whenever I have had an illness or infection I get one or two white spots. Take zinc on its own (not with food or other supps).

#239 - triveni - 12/09/2010 - 03:56
In addition to the basics (salt, baking soda, peroxide) Allum is antiviral/fungal/septic and can come from any member of the Allium family, e.g. garlic or onion; Onion also covers the Sulfuric Acid angle (it's what make us cry), but in metabolically manageable amounts. Ginger should have come at the top of the list as it not only heals, but relieves pain; not as much as a bit of raw licorice; but ginger and licorice are good as teas, especially adding honey. Here's some worth mentioning, but just for the bacterial strands or changing up the hurt: Wasabi, Capsicum, Cinnamon, Tea Tree, and Yoghurt.
Start with a salt/soda/Hperoxide rinse. Suck on some onion/garlic, oil and salt for a few minutes, pop in a stick of licorice or some ginger, and sip their tea+honey.

I'm going to try aloe vera juice. Salt and/or baking soda with warm water helps a little. I bought a natural 'Ora-Med' that is oil of menthol. Burns a bit but then numbs it for a while. Mouth ulcers are a great way to lose weigh 'cuz it hurts to eat. :~(

My husband and son suffer all the time with mouth ulcers, at present my son is suffering terribly. Hubbies brother has just had his tongue cut and reshaped due to and ulcer which turned into cancer. Do not neglect any ulcers in the mouth if they continue to grow in the same spot, go see about it and the Dr should take a bi op of it. This ulcer my brother in law had, was told, was "just an ulcer" another month and he might not have been so lucky, he went back and again sort help. Now 18 nodes out, a hole in the neck to breath, cannot talk, huge operation, through the mouth, both sides of his neck have huge scars and his arm from the graft to rebuild his tongue. So!! again do not just treat yourself, go see about them if they especially or one stays in the same place and just gets bigger, and more painful, go to Dr's. My brother in law is lucky to be here, now we know why he was loosing weight and the pain just drove him nearly to the edge. I wish you all well, salt and water is helping my son at present, rock salt, but he is not swollening it, just rinsing all the time, along with two (2) aspro clear which disolve. Dr's just give you antibotics and you just cannot continue to keep taking them either, he has had 5 lots of antibotics this year alone or last year I should say, and they themselves take all the good things out of your body. Vitamin B is and could be missing from a lot of peoples diets, he does take B's and still gets them...not sure what the answer is, but both have high stress jobs, and that might just be the reason behind, not sure.

I am suffering all the time of these mouth ulcers, especially at the area between my lower lip and lower front teeth gums. I finally took the advice of some Indian colleague to apply antibiotic powder directly to the ulcer. Simply open any antibiotic capsule and use the powder inside it on the ulcer for 2 minutes, it will mix with your saliva forming a paste. after that spit and rinse mouth with cold water for the bad bitter taste to go!
It works magic and within 12 hours the ulcer will completely disappear.
Use Ampcillin or Amoxicillin 500mg for best results and lowest risks of side effects, although there is NO side effects because you will spit all the paste out of your mouth.
Best of luck for all of you curing this killing pain mouth ulcers.

I am allergic to the ingreedient in toothpaste that makes it foam/bubble called Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS). This causes the mouth to break out in ulcers. DO NOT EVER PUT TOOTHPASTE ON AN ULCER!
I switched to a toothpaste called Biotene (has no SLS), and I now only get mouth ulcers when I experience trauma to the mouth. By this I mean accidentally biting my lip, tongue, cheek, etc. while chewing, or an abrasion caused by sharp foods like tortilla chips or hard candy scraping or puncturing cheeks, gums, lips, etc. I've learned to dip a Q-tip in hydrogen-peroxide and swab the abrasion as soon as possible. The sooner you do it, the smaller the ulcer and shorter the healing time.
Warm salt water rinse is a remedy so old that my grandma did it when she was a girl. It helps disinfect the mouth, but for me personally it doesn't seem to shorten my healing time or pain.
All of the over the counter products in the store I have tried seem to aggrivate my ulcers and make them worse.
The honey thing I have tried for a split lip (works well!), but not an ulcer. I may give that a go here soon...
Foods that are salty or spicy will aggrivate ulcers and cause extra pain, and especially SUGAR!!! No sweets! I try to eat very bland and plain foods. I follow the B.R.A.T diet (Bananas- Rice- Apples-Toast). If the pain is too much to even chew foods, I stay full by means of milk and milkshakes - ONLY THROUGH A STRAW.

For a long time i've suffered from mouth ulcers but THANKS to all the commentators on this site i've finally found the cures.
From my past experience i've come to the conclusion that only one remedy doesn't cure ulcers because we can never know the exact cause and even if we know the remedy just doesn't seem to work sometimes.
So here is list of remedies which made the ulcer vanish in two days, none of these remedies burnt or hurt.
1. Borex (homeopathic medicine)
2. Psyllium husk (isbagol) with water
3. Honey application
4. Alum application
5. Turmeric application
6. Vitamin B-Complex syrup
7. Hydrogen peroxide application
8. Drink indian gooseberry juice

I used to suffer from regular mouth ulcers - like, every couple of weeks at least one or two, nd I've had some giants in my time (up to 10 or 12mm across and 1 or 2 deep!!!).
About eight years ago I started a gluten free diet and realised that I am a coeliac (gluten intolerant). Since then I can count the number of time I've had ulcers on one hand!
Recurring ulcers are generally a sign of an underlying problem - normally poor nutrition, health or a lack of something in your diet, or lack of sleep/too much stress. If you keep getting ulcers don't just treat the symptoms - find the root cause.
Good health. :-)
#257 - Paharti - 02/24/2011 - 06:22
EATING NUTS CAN CAUSE MOUTH ULCERS.
Several years ago I discovered one of the causes for my recurring mouth ulcers is from eating nuts, most any kind; also beans and legumes.
I take L-LYSINE supplement (found in the vitamin section) almost every day and I don't get them anymore. If I feel a bit of a sore coming on, I take two Lysine tables 2 or 3 times a day for a couple of days and then no sore develops. Even after the sore develops, L-Lysine helps it heal quicker.
THIS WORKS FOR ME!!
#258 - Carolyn - 02/25/2011 - 11:23

About 20 years ago a friend told me to use a styptic pencil (it's sold in the men's shaving / razor dept) on the ulcer when you first start getting one. Rub it on there as hard as you can stand, by the next day the ulcer will be GONE. I haven't had one since I started doing this. I'm not sure if it helps a full blown ulcer but if you do it when it first starts, it should help!

Dip a Q-tip into it & dap it onto the ulser. Burns a little at first but after that it relieves the pain.
Massage it in a little bit & (can't prove it, but) I swear it makes it heal faster.
I'd just like to know how tp prevent them from appearing in the first place.
#268 - Keith - 03/29/2011 - 10:32
Salt water seems to be doing the trick for me. I just poured some into a cold glass of water and swirled it around in my mouth for a few minutes. The ulser is still there but the pain is less noticeable. Also, I don't think applying plain salt directly to the ulser will be helpful, anything that stings is probably irritating it, which will only make it worse.
#269 - Isabella - 03/31/2011 - 08:37
Why put up with them? Just go to WalMart and get a bottle of L-Lysine. Take 500-1000 mg daily and you won't get them anymore. I suffered with them for years, started taking L-Lysine once a day and IT WORKS! If I happen to feel one coming on, I take one morning and night and it doesn't even develop. Best thing about it..........it's CHEAP!

IVe had a vicious ulcer on my tongue for days now right where my teeth rub. I cant even eat it hurts so bad...salt water rinse is not helping...the only thing thats been helping is mixing 1 part childrens allergy liquid & 1 part maalox (generic works just fine) it takes tne pain away! This was suggested by a pharmacist n he was right! Ive also been rinsing w/ peroxide n baking soda w/ no luck. Try it, it really works. They also make lil pills that u put on the ulcer that dissolve into
a patch that heals it,i found them at walgreens last time I had one they seemed to work good too.

Right now I am suffering from severe ulcer infection.. It has covered my mouth like hell!!!! my lips are swollen & ulcers can be seen on lips too.. I just cant keep even saliva in ma mouth,, so there is no need to say that I am not eating anything. I wanna tell u very honestly that I have tried almost everything & dey are still increasing. I am suffering since a week. N finally I have got to know dat we can just try to heal them but they will go on their time only. I am taking vitamins, iron and protein supplements. Over dat eating 1500mg amoxyllin a day. N trying all types of home remedies. All I can suggest u is that please don't lose hope and just avoid things that might increase your pain, that's it. Rest they will heal on their time only.
#277 - Surbhy - 04/21/2011 - 03:20
I was surprised to see so many different remedies. I have an ulcer on my bottom lip near the gum :/
A lot of these remedies make me nervous since I don't get canker sores that often and people above had warned about spreading.
Usually what works best for me (since mine aren't usually very big) is an 8oz cup of warm water with about a tsp of salt. It makes the swelling go down and provides pain relief. Also works for tooth aches & abscesses. They just go away on their own in a few days.
If it gets to be more painful or doesn't disappear soon I think I will try the Tea Tree Oil. Thank you to all for the helpful comments!
Sorry to all you that have recurrent mouth ulcers. They suck!! To anyone getting a lot of them or getting them often i seriously suggest you listen to some of the suggestions above - GO SEE A DOCTOR!

My husband suffered from repeated mouth ulcers (not cancer patient)for many years(20 yrs). He would have many ulcers and then they would heal.He also has constipation problem on and off. we didnt link it together until i read a article about lip beauty.can you believe it? no doctor was able to find out but if he tries and combats constipation, he wont have. And wen he suffers from constipation he will have it again. Also, i have seen my grand parents and people their age wash their mouth (gargle and spit water) after using restroom. They say it removes some bad stuff (I am from India) . Guess what, if he tries doing it the ulcers heal fast. I think, there could be many factors for mouth ulcers. But hope this helps someone.

Guys, trust me for mouth ulcers the best medicine is homoepathic medicine : "Merc Sol".
Go to any homeo store near use, as for "Merc Sol" 200 potency in pills in 1 dram bottle.
Take 6 pills every 4 hours ( i.e., around 5 times in a day). Within 2 to 3 days any severe mouth ulcer WILL be healed.
Take these pills again one day for three times, once in 15 days so that this problem does not reccur!
TRY THIS! I am sure this best known and proven remedy.
Dont wastes time and dont torture yourself with unneccessary things.
Thank God if this helped, as he let u know abt this through me!

I had chronic mouth ulcers. i would get them twice a month for about 1-2 weeks. literally every time i turned around i had another ulcer. online, i found someone claiming that Resveratrol, a daily vitamin would help. I was pretty unsure, but started taking the 160mg capsule and have yet to have an ulcer. I even just bit the inside of my lip (which normally causes a huge ulcer) and haven't had an ulcer yet. I just had two ulcers on the inside of my bottom lip a few minutes ago. I put a pinch of rock salt directly on it. It does sting quite a bit for a few minutes, but afterwards, not so much. I just looked at it now and before all the salt had even dissolved, the ulcers were gone! There's still a mild stinging sensation, but the yellowish bumps are gone. You just have to be a trooper and bear it for 5 - 10 minutes, or until the rock salt has dissolved in your mouth.

This was my first encounter with mouth ulcer or abscess, pain unbearable pain. Went to the dentist he prescribed antibiotics, still did not work. I took the advice of trying the peroxide i found on your site. I tried it on a Monday evening and by the Tuesday morning it was gone . It sure does pay to read. Thank you.

As a sufferer for over 40 years I have tried almost everything. Thank you for all the new suggestions. I am currently trying tee tree oil with little result so far. What I have perceived from all comments is that what may work for one person may not work for another. I have yet to find my cure. Last year my ulcers were so bad because my immune system was stressed so I went to a Natropath and he put me on sublingual B12. It was sheer bliss for 5 months and now the ulcers are back! He has since put me on a different B12 with little change in a week and a half. Well, here's to finding "my" cure (actually I would prefer prevention which is what the B12 is supposed to be).

I found the cause of my current uncer outbreak. After my last posting I read about Sodium lauryl Sulfate in toothpaste being a cause. I stopped using SLS toothpaste five days ago and I expect all will be clear by tomorrow. Everyone who posted above, except those who know, should turn to SLS-free herbal toothpaste immediately.

go to any local drug store or superstore, like Walmart and get Kanka. It's about $4 and you literally get instant relief. It numbs the ulcer and begins drying it immediately upon application. I was in tears going in to buy the stuff and seconds after applying it to my ulcer I'm finally feeling better! Best $4 I've ever spent. Worth the trip.

People I recommend a butter and salt candy. That may improve your mouth ulcers. Tried eating that and it solves the ulcer pains. And it's cheap!
