I recently suffered a severe ankle sprain. After trying the RICE method with no success I went to my home remedies book. I was reminded there of my grandmother's "cure" I soaked strips of newspaper in vinegar, wrapped those around my ankle and then wrapped all in saran wrap. The next day I was able to bear weight and most of the swelling had gone down.
Good luck.
