NATURAL HOME REMEDIES FOR COUGH

What is Cough ?
Coughing is known to be a process that helps in getting rid of the harmful substances from the respiratory tract. Although in most cases coughing is good for the body, it becomes uncomfortable when it is persistent and severe. However, a cough can easily be treated by making use of home remedies or over-the-counter medications. If your cough is very severe or persistent, it is recommended that you seek medical treatment from your doctor.

Symptoms of Cough

A person who is suffering from a cough might experience symptoms such as headaches, sneezing and fever. Fever is a clear indicator of the presence of an infection in the body. When it is accompanied by a persistent cough, it often indicates an infection in the respiratory tract. The affected people might also experience severe pressure in the area around the sinuses. This happens because of the build-up of mucous in these areas. This mucous tends to thicken and exerts pressure on the sinuses. This makes them painful and sensitive. In many cases, the patient might suffer from persistent sneezing. This is true in cases of seasonal allergies. Such allergies cause the problem of coughing and sneezing. Breathing difficulties are also common among those who are suffering from the problem of cough.

Causes of Cough

According to the 'Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment 2009', an upper respiratory tract infection is known to be a common cause of cough and can last for as long as 3 weeks. This infection is known to affect the pharynx and larynx, which are known to collectively make up the upper respiratory tract. The common causes for an upper respiratory tract infection are common colds, sinusitis, otitis media and pharyngitis. These infections are often accompanied by fever, headache and cough. Allergic rhinitis is also known to be a common trigger for coughs. Allergic rhinitis is a condition that occurs when the immune system responds to a foreign substance called an allergen. You may be prone to suffering from this condition all year long or only during certain seasons. Weed pollen, grass pollen, mold, animal hair and dust are considered common allergens that trigger symptoms of allergic rhinitis. In her book 'Handbook of Pathophysiology', Dr. Elizabeth Corwin states that pneumonia is an infection that affects the lungs and lower respiratory tract and triggers symptoms of coughing. In individuals older than 30 years of age, pneumonia is known to occur as a result of bacteria, especially S. pneumoniae. Pneumonia is often accompanied by symptoms of chest pain, fever, sudden chills and fast breathing. This condition is associated with inflammation of the airways as well as irritation of the nerve receptors of the airways. This effect is known to cause the individual to cough excessively.

Types of Cough

There are basically three types of cough: Dry cough, Wet cough and Paroxysmal cough.

Dry Cough

Dry cough is commonly known as non-productive cough due to the fact that it produces no phlegm and in some cases, very little phlegm. The Penn State College of Medicine's 'Milton S. Hershey Medical Center' states that dry cough mostly occurs as a result of upper respiratory tract infections. Sore throat, tonsillitis, laryngitis, sinusitis, influenza and head colds are common types of upper respiratory tract infections. In most cases, these infections are triggered by viruses and resolve within a week or two without medications.

Wet Cough

Wet cough is known as a productive cough due to the fact that it produces phlegm. A wet cough is often an indicator of any condition that is associated with the excess production of mucus in the lungs. Pneumonia is known to be one of the most common causes of productive cough. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute states that when pneumonia occurs, it causes the air sacs to be filled with fungi and viruses, thereby leading to inflammation, leading to the build-up of mucus and fluid in the airways.

Paroxysmal Cough

Paroxysmal cough is a condition associated with uncontrollable coughing for long periods of time, resulting in a 'coughing fit'. In most cases, this condition occurs due to whooping cough. Other common causes of this type of cough are tuberculosis, asthma and bronchiectasis. Bronchiectasis is a condition that is associated with the widening of airways, thereby resulting in permanent damage to them. 'The National Heart" Lung and Blood Institute' states that cysti, fibrosis is one of the most common causes of bronchiectasis in the United States.

Home Remedies for Cough

Peppermint

The University of Maryland Medical Center states that peppermint possesses menthol, which plays the role of a decongestant. The menthol present in peppermint helps in loosening the phlegm present in the lungs, thereby helping you to cough it out easily. Peppermint also helps in soothing the throat as well. It can also be used to treat a dry cough. You can take peppermint in the form of tea or tincture. You can also purchase peppermint lozenges as well.

Mullein

Drugs.com states that mullein is an herb that possesses expectorant and suppressant properties, thereby making it effective in the treatment of chronic cough as well as sore throat. Mullein is usually consumed in the form of tea to treat chronic coughs. You can easily purchase mullein tea from any health store. If you do not have access to mullein tea, you can easily prepare it at home by adding one teaspoon of dried mullein leaves to a cup of hot water and allow it to steep for at least 15 minutes. Strain the tea and allow it to cool. You can consume this tea two to three times each day to experience relief.

Honey

Honey is considered an effective home remedy for relieving coughs and enables you to sleep properly at night. According to a research study published in 'Archives of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine' in the year 2007, it was observed that honey proved more effective in treating coughs in children than dextromethorphan, which is a popular cough medicine. As a part of the research study, 105 young people in the age range of 2 to 18 years old were given buckwheat honey or highly flavoured dextromethorphan. All of these individuals were suffering from infections of the upper respiratory tract. The research study showed that honey was more effective in easing the symptoms of cough compared to honey-flavoured medication. Honey is known to possess antioxidant properties and is contributes to the effectiveness of this home remedy. Dr. Ian Paul states that dark honey is more rich in antioxidants than the lighter variety. Honey is also better than other traditional medications due to the fact that it does not trigger side effects such as drowsiness. Mayoclinic.com warns that honey should not be administered to those who are less than 12 months old as it can result in a type of food poisoning known as infant botulism.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is an herb that is considered an effective natural remedy for treating several conditions such as wounds, fever as well as respiratory ailments. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that research studies conducted on animals proves that eucalyptus possesses expectorant properties and is effective in loosening phlegm. Before you consume this herb orally, it is highly recommended that you consult your doctor, as it can be toxic in nature, if not diluted properly. To treat cough, you can also make use of eucalyptus in the form of lozenges, rubs and cough syrups. You can also add some eucalyptus oil to steaming water and use it for inhalation.

Thyme

This herb is also known for its effectiveness in the treatment of respiratory conditions. The Natural Health Encyclopaedia of Herbal Medicine states that thyme was used to treat cases of whooping cough in days gone by. Even today, it is considered to be a very effective tonic and decongestant. It helps to strengthen the lungs and the other parts of the respiratory system. According to this book, thyme helps to strengthen the immune system and keeps a wide range of infections away. This makes it very useful in the treatment of chest conditions such as bronchitis. In most cases, thyme is consumed in the form of an herbal tea. However, tinctures and supplements can also be used instead of the tea.

Echinacea

According to the Natural Health Encyclopaedia of Herbal Medicine, echinacea is very effective in treating conditions such as bronchitis due to the fact that it is able to counter infections that are caused by viruses and bacteria. It also helps in keeping such infections away in the future due to the fact that it strengthens the immune system to a great extent. The root of this herb is used in the preparation of echinacea tea. This tea can be consumed on a regular basis ,by the affected people. Echinacea supplements can also be consumed along with the tea. Such supplements are prepared from various parts of the herb.

Marshmallow

This herb is very effective in the treatment of cough because it forms a thick slimy layer over the linings of the throat. This helps to bring about healing in these areas. Marshmallow must be consumed along with a sufficient amount of water, in order for it to be effective. In the 1992 edition of 'Pharmazie', it was mentioned that marshmallow extracts possess antitussive properties, which means that they are able to suppress a cough.

Slippery Elm

This herb is also able to bring about healing in mild and severe cases of cough. According to Dr. Varro E. Tyler, this is because slippery elm is a mucilaginous plant. It helps to soothe the inflamed linings of the throat and respiratory passages and this helps to promote healing at a rapid rate. However, women who are pregnant and new mothers must avoid the use of this herb, as it is capable of causing various complications.

Coltsfoot

This herb is helpful in treating cases of cough because it contains mucilage. Mucilage helps to shield and nourish the inflamed linings of the throat and respiratory passages. According to David Hoffman's book 'Medical Herbalism: The Science and Practice of Herbal Medicine', coltsfoot helps to bring about the expulsion of mucous due to its expectorant properties. It is also able to bring the cough under control, as it is anti-spasmodic in nature. However, it is important to note that long-term use of this herb can affect the liver in a negative way and so it is important to discontinue the use of this herb after the cough subsides completely.

Anise

Botanist Ben-Erik van Wyk and biologist Michael Wink have written a book titled 'Medicinal Plants of the World'. In this book, they state the effectiveness of anise in the treatment of respiratory conditions such as cough, bronchitis and asthma. Anise contains a compound called anethole, which is very effective in boosting the health of the bronchial cells. It is a powerful expectorant and is able to bring about the expulsion of accumulated mucous from the respiratory tract. Anise is also a very powerful anti-spasmodic agent. However, medical experts recommend that you avoid making use of this herb if you are already consuming anticoagulant medicines as this can result in adverse side effects. You must also make sure to consult your doctor regarding the correct dosage of this herb.

Other Home Remedies for Cough
  • You can easily treat dry cough by gargling with warm spinach juice. Gargle with this juice as you wake up and before you go to bed.
  • Make a paste from 4-5 almonds, 20 grams butter and 20 grams sugar. Consume it twice each day. Remove the brown coating before using the almonds to prepare the paste.
  • Prepare a tea from anise and holy basil. Consume this tea at least two times each day to experience relief from cough.
  • Chew a few flakes of raw garlic on empty stomach. This remedy is effective for cough, as it possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
  • Cut a lime into two pieces and rub some black pepper into it. Suck the lime to experience relief from cough.
  • Add a pinch of white pepper to a teaspoon of honey and consume it twice each day. This remedy is helpful in reducing cough symptoms and the patient experiences relief within 4-5 days.

Diet for Cough

Avoid Sugar

Dr. James Balch states that white flour and sugar are known to be responsible for supressing the immune system and deterring the process of healing. This is true even for cases of cough. Low levels of cortisol are also known to be responsible for triggering cold and cough. It is extremely important that you avoid fried and junk foods.

Have Soups

Health experts highly recommend soup to treat the symptoms of cough and cold. Healthbulletin.org states that in a research study conducted in the year 2000, physicians not only cited the effectiveness of soup for cough, they also stated that chicken soup was the most effective remedy for cough. Although the actual reason behind the effectiveness of this soup has not been found out, it has been stated that warm soup helps in reducing inflammation in the throat, which is commonly associated with cough. In some cases, having spicy soup is also helpful in treating cough. This is due to the presence of capsaicin in red peppers, which are commonly used to make food spicy. Capsaicin is helpful in thinning the mucus and plays the role of an expectorant. Health expert Bill Gottlieb highly recommends spicy soups to treat cough due to the soothing properties of soup and the expectorant properties of spicy foods.

Consume Enough Fluids

Even if you aren't suffering from high fever, the body can begin to dehydrate if you are sick. Drinking enough fluids will help in flushing out the toxic components from the body and promote speedy recovery. Health expert Bill Gottlieb states that herbal teas may prove effective in soothing your throat and have a relaxing effect on your body. Foods containing caffeine and refined sugar should be ruled out of your diet completely. Foods with caffeine prevent you from getting proper sleep, which is crucial for the process of healing. Health expert Bill Gottlieb also states that you should avoid consuming dairy products as it can result in the thickening of mucus and deter the healing process.

Cough Prevention

Smoking is known to be one of the most common triggers of cough. When recovering from cough, it is extremely important that you avoid smoking as it aggravates the throat and worsens the symptoms of cough. Regular exercise is also helpful in preventing cough and cold due to the fact that it helps in boosting your immunity. Regular exercise is also helpful in keeping the joints and muscles strong. It helps to reduce weight and boosts the self-confidence of the individual. It is also important that you get enough sleep every day, as lack of sleep may also trigger cough and cold as it weakens your immune system. Health experts highly recommend at least 6-8 hours of sleep each day.

Other Treatment Options for Cough

Vitamins

Vitamins are considered extremely beneficial in treating cough. Vitamin C is known to be a water-soluble vitamin that exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and may prove effective in preventing coughs, colds as well as several other health conditions. According to a research study published in 'Urologic Nursing', it was noted that vitamin C is extremely helpful in preventing the occurrence of cold and reduces the risk of developing pneumonia. Foods that contain vitamin C include lemons, oranges, blueberries, dark green leafy vegetables and kiwi fruit. Vitamin D is known to be a fat-soluble vitamin that is considered helpful in boosting immunity. The University Of Colorado Denver School Of Medicine state that vitamin D deficiency may result in cold and cough, especially during winter months. Foods that contain high amounts of vitamin D include milk, fish oil, tofu and fortified cereals.

Bezonatate

Benzonatate is a medicine that is helpful in decreasing the frequency of coughing fits. Drugs.com states that Benzonatate is a non-narcotic cough medicine that helps in numbing the lungs as well as the throat, thereby reducing the frequency of coughing. However, it is important to note that this medication should only be consumed under the supervision of your physician. There are several side effects associated with this medicine and they include drowsiness, nausea, stomach upset, headache and constipation. In rare cases, this medication may also trigger chest pain, hallucinations and confusion. When using this medication, it is important that you swallow the tablet and not suck on to it. This is because it can have a numbing effect on the mouth and trigger other side effects as well.

This helps when you have a really bad cough or cold. I don't like the taste of garlic ... so one of my fav recipes is this:

1) You'll need a bagel, slice of brea or 2 (depending on your appetite), or some crackers

2) Cream cheese (any kind .. my fav is the Kraft Green Onion and onion flav)

3) Garlic (minced)

4)Honey

Mix the garlic with the cream cheese. Put in on the bagel, bread, or crackers. Then, pour the honey on top.

Garlic and honey is really good for you when you have a cold.

To drink - - tea w/ honey
or warm milk w/ honey

Do this for 2-3 days and you'll feel a lot better and your cough will go away!!

Breathing in the steam from a boiling pot of water relieves sinus pressure and loosens mucus. Just boil water and place towel over head. Do this for about 45 minutes taking brief fresh air pauses every 5 minutes or when steam feels like it is burning.

It gets worse at night when I go to bed. Now I feel giddy and have body pains too.(I do not know if it has to do with the cough). Nothing is helping really.

Green ginger tea with lemon juice and LOTS of honey. When getting over a cold, I often have such a bad cough that I lose my voice, and this is the only thing I've found that helps. (Although I haven't tried the cayenne pepper concoctions and whatnot, perhaps they're worth a shot next time.) Also be sure to drink plenty of water to loosen the mucus in your chest.
#19 - m - 05/17/2008 - 19:29

OK first off VICKS is not a natural substance, it really should be taken of the Natural remedy site.. come on folks might as well tell me to down a load of "cough syrup".

but juniper, peppermint, eucalyptus and camphor essential oils will remind you very much of vicks, if you need it to be in a paste add it to some coconut oil or natural lotion. that can help break up the mucus in your chest.

for the long term and I am about to brew this up: to help your bodies immune system which is making the cough not fighting it, brew some tulsi tea, with ginger, add lemon and honey and a bit of garlic, let that all brew but drink it hot. then a table spoon of pure honey, may sugar you up but it helps sooth your throat.

Good luck to the coughers, I couldnt even work last night!

over all get lots of rest try to stop smoking, take a long walk to get your blood circulating and meditate on your bodies natural ability to heal itself, you may find there is a reason for your current condition out in your illusionary world of work and relationships, are you over stressed? is their guilt in your mind, your heart? Do some yoga, let your body work it out but keep in mind its all in your head:)

I seem to do well with relieving my cough with a combination of cayenne pepper and a hot spiced, sugar free cider mix. I believe the cayenne pepper may be the key ingredient. I had ordered out for lunch one day and for some reason or another tried some habanero pepper sauce on some beans. Within 20 minutes, I felt like a new person and was able to breathe without coughing. Rule of thumb, you may want to consult a physician if you have high blood pressure before attempting this remedy.

I used to be so frustrated. About four years back I found out that I was allergic to anything with menthol or menthol-lyptus in it, which means basically anything from the drug store that supposedly helps with cough. I like to use natural remedies as much as I can anyway. Unfortunately, I used some supposedly natural cough drops that had no menthol in the ingredients (so not true) - if anyone else has this allergy, read the fine print because they ALL have it in them.

I recommend a simple mixture of green tea (natural antioxidents) and as much honey as you wish. Any kind of lemon tea will work, but the green tea is better for you. If it's a cough due to allergies, try to stay away from herbal teas as many of those herbs are in the ragweed family, or closely related and will just worsen your cough and allergy. Also, when using honey, try to use a local honey because it will contain the pollen from local allergens which will act the same (or near the same) as an allergy shot and it will help you build an immunity to such allergens.

I need suggestions. I have been coughing something furious the past few days and it just won't go away. And just about an hour ago I had one big cough where a bloody piece of membrane or something came out of my mouth. Since then I have been coughing much less but my upper chest has really sharp pains. Also the past few hours my pee has been a reddish purple color. Should I see a doctor or wait it out?

I have one of those annoying coughs that wont go away no matter what u do. It gets to the point where i almost vomit. I just poured pepper n a little bit of salt on my hand n licked it. my cough went instantly.
#59 - bec - 01/22/2009 - 06:58
I get a cough every year. It starts with a tickle in my throat and then goes to a sore throat. Then I start coughing and some mucus comes up. The cough lasts about 4 months. I have gone to many Dr.'s and they tell me I have asthma (the Dr. gives me an inhaler but does not work). I have tried many things to try and get rid of an annoying cough. I have not tried the lemon with the pepper, so I will try that one. Does anyone have any suggestions?
#60 - Terry - 01/25/2009 - 22:37
To Mikey, #54, who asked if he should see his doctor or wait it out:
at the very least CALL your doctor and describe what is happening--then if he or she doesn't call back soon, go somewhere & see someone. you shouldn't take the advice of people who are not doctors telling you to avoid one. You could have something serious going on, and as natural as we try to be, don't mess with serious stuff like the chest pains, differences in urination, etc. that you described. Really. Using this site should not be a substitute for getting professional medical advice. Even if you don't have insurance there are walk-in (ie less expensive then ER) places usually open late in many areas, & part of a doctor's job is to take phone calls so don't feel bad if you need to call. But if they don't call you back SOON, find a professional to talk to or see just to rule things out. and let us know what happened. hope you are okay.

i need a cure for stretch marks. any suggestions?
#62 - tlugg - 02/09/2009 - 20:30
For a non-stop cough that won't go away and keeps you up at night, mix together well: 1 tsp cayenne pepper; 1 tsp ground ginger; 2 Tbsp water; 1 Tbsp cider vinegar; 1 Tbsp (or more) honey.
Stiry well then drink 2-3 teaspoons. Just gave this to my son who was coughing for a half hour straight. He refuses to let me put the Vicks (camphor, eucalyptus, menthol) on the bottoms of
his feet (although I know for certain it usually works). The liquid mixture stopped his cough within 5 minutes and (it's 3am) he's asleep.

I started out with fever and then a deep cough after the fever was gone... how long before most coughs go away?:-(
#64 - mmG - 02/20/2009 - 21:35
I know everytime anyone in our household gets sick, the coughs are always the last symptom to go away. It can last for a few weeks.
#65 - Liss in PA - 02/22/2009 - 12:20
After reading above posts, I just made my own version of cough syrup, I already feel better. I just boiled cinnamon, fennel (sauf) powder, black pepper, sugar and a tea bag. At the same time squeezed half lemon in my cup and poured this hot herbal mix. Have it hot. Try to feel each sip in your throat and you will feel better.

#67 - Tangy - 03/10/2009 - 14:10
I have a cough that is from a cold that I had this week. I don't mind coughing, dont get me wrong, but when it is bothering whoever you are sleeping with and cutting into your prime sleeping hours, that is a problem! I would rather be sick sick than have this nasty dry cough that is mainly at night...Anyway, in hopes of a good WORKING home remedy on here.....I don't have much food in my house however, I do have salt, pepper, honey, and tea...I know, sounds weird...pepper in tea...But just mix it all together and warm it up, drink it hot....It works! At least for those who are like me and dont keep the refrigerator stocked up with all these unusual things!! ;-)
#68 - Jus_Mee - 03/15/2009 - 00:42
Try a few drops of peppermint oil (from a health food store) or a half cup white vinegar in your vaporizer. You can also try vicks on your feet with socks or vicks on your chest covered with a washcloth.
#69 - Heather - 03/15/2009 - 18:20
I have tried EVERYTHING ..for 14 years now..did the hot tea thing for awhile, but it wears off so quickly on me, heard about the vicks thing a couple of years ago..didn't work for me..i take a couple of slices of pickle chips and put quite a bit of salt and pepper on them and eat ...it's really amazing how fast it works..also i've done the orange slice w/ s+p..both remedies work great! :-D

i m suffering from cold & cough from 6 years.
i avoid yoghurt, cold drink, ice-cream or any cold items but i feel always cold & cough
#76 - Ratan - 05/11/2009 - 08:13
I get this twice a year... at the change of the season. I get a cold and then a cough that can easily last up to a month.

Hot drinks work really well. Anything that doesn't contain caffeine (it'll keep you awake, unless you're braving the real world, then go for it), add some spices, I usually use a pinch of anything that happens to be at home. Pepper, mint, ginger, if you've got garlic, crush a clove and drop it in as well... and honey. Honey is a cure-all. If you can stand it, some heavy alcohol like rum or whiskey will put you right to sleep. I like to vary it because if this happens regularly like mine, you'll get tired of it.

Avoid dairy 'cause it promotes phlegm. Drink lots of water, it'll loosen the phlegm and flushes your system.

Also, prevention is better than cure - if you do something about your cough regularly you won't have to find yourself in public coughing up your lungs and resorting to some pharmacy-toxin.

And another thing VICKS IS NOT NATURAL. If it works for you, good, but this site claims to be natural and yet every third post proclaims Vick's is best. REMOVE IT PLEASE

Well, the best I can do is try a bagel with cream cheese and dried garlic and lemonpepper on it with a hot cup of lemon tea mixed with vanilla/honey tea (not actual honey, the tea flavor is vanilla & honey) let's see how it goes as it's 2 A.M and I haven't slept normally for almost a week because of the cough...wasn't bad until yesterday and couldn't get Dr. appt...well, coughed right after eating bagel, but it didn't hurt as much (didn't cough while eating it), working on tea...yeah, it's 2 and I can't sleep...tea seems to be helping!!
#80 - Done with the cough... - 06/07/2009 - 00:54
First, remove the REASON for the cough, for example, if u have a lot of mucus down ur throaght, then you should remove it first. Try some medicaments that help dissolve or push out the mucus, or simply try coughing it out if u can.
Second, mix 4 tsp honey, with 1 tsp ginger power, 1/2 tsp black pepper powder, and 2 tsp water. Eat slowly, 2-3 tsp when u have cough. Will work instantly, better do it so ur cough stops and then sleep right away before u start feeling like coughing again.

You can try chopping up six onions and put into a pot with a half cup of honey. Cook slowly for two hours then strain. Take in regular intervals, preferably warm.

You can also try eating 2 oz. of dark chocolate. There is an ingredient in chocolate that helps stop coughs. Effects should last about four hours.

I gave my eight year old daughter limon juice(didnt have a real lemon at 12:00 at night) with pepper and salt it worked in minutes.she just sipped on it for 5-10 minutes she has asthma so it is hard to find something that works.this workes great!!!!!
#93 - amanda - 08/07/2009 - 02:11
Holistic approach, will work:
1) Take in lots of fluids, preferably warm as possible with lemon, ginger, honey, cayenne or black pepper (all or even 1 of these will help). Need to keep hydrated when fighting a cough. This means drinking 3 to 4 times as much as usual. You should begin to pee very often - do this for 2 to 3 days until cough is half as bad and then reduce liquids to 2 times more than usual for another 3 to 5 days, then go back to normal drinking.
2) Can also use steam treatments with menthol, eucalyptus, camphor or similar things to help further keep hydration up.
3) Take a tablet of zinc gluoconate 3 to 4 times a day for first 3 days, then daily until all well. Also can take lozenges or zinc oral spray. Body needs the zinc to fight the infection - proven to reduce coughs and colds.
4) Take a magnesium citrate tablet or magnesium chelate tablet (chelated is best) 3 x per day for 5 days. Add this to your daily diet by taking 1 tablet daily for maxium protection and wellness.
5) Also a good idea to take a multi MINERAL tablet a few times a week to keep up minerals in the body which are always depleted nowadays. Chelated forms are best.
6) Lots of sleep and rest.
7) Try the teas and other herbal solutions mentioned here in place of #2, but need to do all 6 things for quick and total cure.
God Bless and all the best!

Hi Everyone,
I feel for everyone; and not knowing what remedies to take. I'm too have chronic coughing. It's every single day/ night. It interfere with my life, at work, in the movies, at home, subway, everywhere I go and do.
It can be from Asthma or Post nasal drip. You should do the following suggestion:
1. Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Doctor, to rule out the possibilities'
2. Holistic Med's
3. Acid Flux- Read on it; it mention Chronic Coughing.

Well, God bless you all. I hope someone can give us all an educated guess what "WE" really have; and can do for us.

:-)
#95 - sylvie - 08/12/2009 - 11:55
i love this - "i have a cough due to smoking." well, have you tried NOT smoking???

if it is a productive cough, encourage it, spitting out the phlegm (or your tummy will be upset).

for a dry, unproductive cough, honey seems to be the magic bullet :)
#96 - A. - 08/14/2009 - 10:53
:-)Make a tea with chamomile, sabucus, basil, and agrimonium!Make it strong and ad a teaspoon of honey! It will help A LOT!

:-DGreetings friends,It's that time of the season where pollen is very high (northeast) I agree with the Muliti vitamin, magnesium.Plenty of fluids, local area honey is wonderful, about a table spoon daily.Mucinex is a great product found in Walmart,or most drug stores.Plenty of water.Time to get those vaporizers out and ready for the season, make sure they are clean (filters) Also herbal teas, cayanne and black currant syrup is wonderful preventitives,For us asthmatics, make certian your nebulizers are clean/ready to use
'One more suggestion,MOST allergens enter the body thru our sinuses, read information on the NETTI POT,clean sinuses = a smoother cold and flu season for us.An ounce of prevention,is worth a pound of cure>>

One of my health newsletters recommended the herb Stinging Nettle for cough/asthma. Four years ago I found that the Nature's Way brand Nettle works for me. I was able to give up 5 prescription asthma medications if I take the Nettle capsules every day. Much better.

I've been left with a persistent cough and tight airways since having the flu. A naturopath told me to boil 1tsp fenugreek seeds in a cup of water and drink 3 times/day to break up mucous. This is helping. You can strain or eat the seeds, which I enjoy doing.
I also tried eating a thick slice of raw onion, chopped and dipped in a couple of tspns of honey. This gave me some instant relief. Red onion is easier to eat than white or brown.

I do not understand why some of you want Vick's VapoRub to be removed. Its ingredients of Camphor, Menthol and Eucalyptus oil are natural.

FYI...
Camphor is considered as essential oil and came from Camphor tree (cinnamomum camphora) that is native of China, Japan and eastern Asia. It can also be made synthetically.

Menthol is an organic compound made from peppermint oil or other mint oils. It is also made synthetically.

Vick's VapoRub can be considered a natural remedy and it has its place in this page.

this is the best method it works for me all the time...
1. Take 2 tbsp of Carom seed (ajwain)
2. Boil that in water on low heat...until you see about 2 to 3 tbsp of water left.
3. Drain it in a small cup
4. Mix 2 pinchs of salt and tumeric powder
5. Drink this mixture everyday before going to bed, until your cough is gone...and do not take water after this.

It concerns me some people saying they have had coughs or colds for years. It sounds like immunity is very low. What is your diet like ? And do you have any digestive problems that could be causing vitamin and mineral loss? Or any other health problems that could indicate a deficiency? You should not have a cough or cold for years.

try this if this one dont work then i dont know any other options that will, here do this, take off all your clothes, rub vicks vaporab all over your body, but more on your neck and chest and back and feet, once thats done, get inside a blanket and roll your self like a mummy, roll your self like your rolling an eggrole or burito, keep your self warm for 30 mins, inside that blanket, after that, drink real lemons and mix it with lime, real not juice, and add honey, and microwave it for 30 secs, and drink it, once your done, i suggest that you need to [@], this is part of the healing process, [@] until you cum, and once you cum, your going to feel sleepy and go get your rest or sleep once you wake up, i promise you your cough is gone for life. it always work for me every winter season, and im still doing it till now. let me know if it works on you. good luck:-D

try sprinkling a little ground ginger in the bottom of a mug, then pour about half a centimetre of hot water on top (doesnt have to be completely accurate) then add about the same amount of honey as you did water. Give it a stir until the honey has thinned, then add some fresh lemon juice to it, works for me :-D give it a try!

I have dry cough for the last 5 months. While spitting i feel that a very little mucus also coming along with saliva. I consulted 3 doctors, they tried all medicines, nexim, antiallergic, cough syrupes etc. no improvement.. so the doctors told that this may be a allergic cough and have to find the reason for the cough. So I need your advice.

what's the best natural way for dry coughing?
[email protected]
I have been coughing for 3 months now and I have found that drinking lots of water and sucking on lozenges is best , along with taking fenugreek & thym or liquorice root for a dry cough ....good luck to all of us !!
#153 - patty - 01/18/2010 - 12:39
Chew raw Ajwain and allow the juice from it to slowly flow down the throat. It provides excellent healing from Cough. My mother used to make the Lime pickle (punjabi type) and allow it to cure for 3-4 months. It has lot of ajwain and other herbs in it. It truly works as a medicine.

#160 - Katherine - 02/10/2010 - 15:58
I had one of those coughs that wake you up in the middle of the night where your throat is so dry and water isn't the answer. I decided to try regular mustard.
I guess it's the turmeric maybe but whatever it worked instantly and back to sleep I went
#161 - longone - 02/10/2010 - 20:19
I just ate 2 tablespoons of honey with a pinch of black pepper, ground cinnamon, and salt. Now I'm drinking warm water. I hope this method works. :D
#162 - Goodnight Seattle - 02/11/2010 - 21:13
I had a really bad cough and my friend told me about this tea remedy.. half of a red onion,1 garlic clove and 5 black cloves, add Enough water for a cup of tea and boil all together. It works miracles. You'll see!! Also if you are not allergic to silver. Try buying.. a bottle of MESOSILVER..that kills anything and everything.it makes your immune system stronger after it gets into your bloodstream. Just drink a teaspoon everyday. I used to get sick all the time with colds,infections,headaches.. You named it.. After I started taking the mesosilver.. I didn't have a cold for almost 2 years.. (had a cold for 2 days only) and as far as getting sick with anything else...Nothing at all!! mesosilver kills bacteria, but Some people say.. Mesosilver cures even a virus..I read about it, it's been around for centuries and for me.. It has works miracles!! Just don't make it at home.. because it could be dangerous if you don't know how to make it..Just buy it. A small bottle it's about $25. I buy the bigger bottle.. $50 bucks!! And it last a while.. I just loveee iittt!!! I hope this helps!!!!
#163 - Isabel - 02/15/2010 - 10:26

Mix a camphor tablet in cow's ghee. Rub the tablet hard in lukewarm ghee on your palm. Now apply this mixture in your nostrils before going to bed. Works well on a runny nose.

I am so deeply grateful for whoever came up with the vicks on the feet with socks. I finally got some relief after days of coughing so bad my back and stomach hurt, and nothing helped!
#168 - Tera - 02/27/2010 - 20:37
Bodies are all different, so try differnt things until you find what works for YOU. My mix for coughs: in 8 oz boiling water mix 1/2 teasp mashed garlic, 1/2 teasp ginger powder, 2 teasp ACV (apple cider vinegar), 1 teasp lemon juice, and a smidgen of hot pepper sauce. Sip slowly. As for the feet/socks thingy, don't have Vicks, so I'm trying Icy Hot.
#169 - James - 03/04/2010 - 03:43
Check for underlying conditions. a thyroid problem and Acid Reflux are some reasons for constant throat irritation and cough

Ooh la- I'm 5 months pregnant with a cough that would make the baby cringe from the inside. No sleep for 3 nights. Right now I steamed with 2 fisherman friend lozenges (original) and a licorice/mint tea bag- than made tea with the water adding lemon, ground pepper, a dash cayenne sauce (ie tabasco- which has vinegar in it already), tablespoon honey, cinnamon and a pinch salt. Thank God my sinuses are blocked- because that thing burns- it must taste crappy- but I coughed 1 time and it was a good productive one- then no more. I guess I burned the tickle out of my throat? Let's just hope this isn't a serious recipe for heartburn... and then it will be tiger balm on the feet too. After the relaxing shower- omg I have to sleep.
#173 - preggers - 03/12/2010 - 15:56
:-D Hot lemon juice mixed with fresh mint and 1/2 tsp of honey works wonders for my throught :)

Honey is DANGEROUS for babies. The bacteria in honey is safe for adults, but babies may get very very sick.. look it up if you need to. Many people have not heard of this, but pass the word. I've heard of taking a baby with you into a steamy bathroom for a bit, then outside for a minute in the cool air. This worked for my babies, might be worth trying. Also, I know that Vicks is not "natural" but I have some, and it helped me (on soles of feet with socks). I didn't have herbal remedy, but really needed that sleep!
#190 - jellybeanmom - 04/10/2010 - 00:53

Suffer chronic bronquitis. This time been suffering from coughs and heavy phlem for last 6 months. Tried antibiotics with absolutely no results. Cut dairy products, and every two days at night swallowed a piece of garlic with echinacea and two or three seeds of black pepper relatively crushed. In a week became absolutely free of bronquitis. But underwent a kidney cyst attack. Stopped the magic formula and cough came back. So I am starting again all over but this time with great water consumtion. Maybe that ll do the trick for good . Vick formula very good. Cheers to everyone
#195 - Richard - 04/29/2010 - 23:05
An old pioneer remedy is to mix 1/4 teaspoon butter, 1/4 teaspoon of honey and 1/4 teaspoon of ginger. Suck on this slowly so that it coats the throat. The butter helps it coat the throat, the honey sweetens it and the ginger is the cure. Black pepper seems to also be helpful in the cure as it is listed often here. Try a few herbs and test the results!
#196 - Wanda - 05/07/2010 - 05:10
My favorite remedy was when I had a sore throat that felt like strep and after taking antibiotics for a week and I still had the sore throat I realized that it must be mono because I had fatigue and no fever. I juiced wheatgrass, gargled with it and then drank it. Wheatgrass has a lot of vitamins and minerals so it is very healing. Within 2 days I had more energy than I had had in months! I hope to grow it soon.

Hi, My 1 yr old daughter has had a very persistant cough for over four months of her short little life and none of the doctors know why it wont go away. It is a chesty, productive cough, and she often brings herself to vomit to get the mucus up. Shes been on four different types of antibiotics, nothing works. I can't give her cayenne pepper, or alot of the ingredients above, does anyone know the safest and most effective cure for a baby?
Thanks

take half cup of milk and add 4 pinches of Turmeric powder and if you want add 3 pnches of black pepper powder and heat ..It should be medium hot.. then drink it. (if you need sweet use honey not the sugar) sugar makes the cough worse..
turmeric powder makes the chest mucus loosen. I hope you feel better
#202 - Uma - 06/02/2010 - 07:15
after readin through all this last night, i concocted my own remedy and not to my surprise it worked :)
i took half a lemon and squeezed all the juice out of it and poured into a mug, mashed up like 15 grapes and poured the juice into the same mug (while eating the grape skin) grinded some black pepper (just a lil) little bit of honey mixed in, pinch of cinnomon and added some boiled water. i should be selling this in bottles out of the store. :):):)
this site actually [@] now that i realized i cannot copy what i just wrote... take that copyright protected bull crap off "natural-homeremedies" i should erase everything i just wrote becasue of this. but since im such a nice guy ill leave it for other people suffering from a cough

actually i kno of one thing that is, but its kinda barbaric. eat dark chocolate. you have to let it melt. there is an ingredient in it called theobromine that has been demonstrated to relieve coughing. it also helps sore throats.
Good Luck :)

Here is for people like Patti #15 with cronic cough especially during nights. It is worst because of teh position you are in while lying causes nasal dripping directly into your throat that irritates and cause the caugh to get worse. Nasal mist spray or sealine will help thin out the mucus that will fix your caught in a day or 2. To be more on the natural side, use Neti pot and use warm water with hint of salt and neti twice to three times a day followed by salt and warm water gargles. Feel free to use honey/lemon/ginger juice mixes but they are all temporary. I would definitly take a couple of benadryls and go to sleep for a kick start...

The remedy we were given for coughs as youngsters is...

thinly slice an onion into rings and place in a bowl or saucer. cover liberaly with white sugar and leave on top of fridge or on the kitchen sideboard.. within 20 mins the sugar will have encouraged the onion to release juice and the sugar naturally melts into the onion juice making a syrup.

Take 1-2 teaspoons of syrup every few hours.. the onion will continue to make juice until all the sugar has dissolved.. so add more sugar when this stops happening.. eventually you will have to slice a new onion and start again. It works brilliantly and if your kids have the cough get them to help make this magic juice so they will be more inclined to take it

When I have a really bad cough I shake violently and my body goes into strange contusions. Anywho that was a little too much info for all yall. What seems to work for my bad self is cutting up a half of a cucumber sprinke it with a little jamacian jerk and then placing the slices in the oven. Wait roughly 5 mins then open up. If it doesn't cure your cough invite over some friends and rent a movie. You already have the snacks if you know what I mean. And let the good times roll. Peace in the Middle East :-P

Hello everyone. I'm sorry all you children are having a cough problem. I'm bored of all this talk about a bad cough lets change subjects.
I would like to announce that I'm currently off the market and am no longer going to be a part of this dating website. It was very delectable experience.
Thank you for your time.
P.s
The best cure for a bad cough is a spoonful of sugar with medicine. Make sure you get your medicine from a knowledgeable doctor. Or eating a cut of a flinestone vitamin with salt and pepper on it works the best. Take my word.

I have Had this terrible cough and sore throat on and off all year and I have tried so many different medicines from cold to flu to a simple cough syrup and none of which have worked. I'm younger so I don't have many of the stuff listed for all these home remedies posted so after reading the main ingredients to most of these I made do with what I have and thought it might be helpful for others as it helped me and put me right to sleep.I just took some apple cider warmed it up for 1 1/2 minutes then added garlic powder black pepper and lemon pepper. I was so scared to try it after smelling it (it smells horrible) but it actually worked hope others find this helpful:-)
#234 - ashley - 09/28/2010 - 01:17
:-) lemon with pepper and salt, that is all that it takes, try it

Hey guys,

Just got a stupid strep throat infection. My caught isn't letting me sleep! I've tried the tea and I will go try the vick's; as for the lemon with salt and pepper, how bad tasting is it?

Thanks every1, hope we all get better asap
#236 - babygurl914 - 09/30/2010 - 02:13
I tried what someone on here posted and it seems to be working...

Try 1 TBS Honey mixed with 1/2 TSP of Cinnamon.

I thought it was going to be dry, but it wasn't. I put some honey on first then the cinnamon followed by some more honey. Worked like a charm! Thanks!:-D

Hi, my daughter was coughing for last week, every night and day from a sinus problem. I sprinkled black pepper into her hand, had her lick it off her hand and her cough stopped IMMEDIATELY!.....it worked! Thx to you all!

If you have a respiratory infection going, try this remedy also:

Get a cool mist vaporizer, fill it 2/3 full (preferably with filtered water, or boil tap water on stove and cool iit before you put in humidifier). Then add one bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide 3% (regular kind from drugstore or grocery store) into humidifer with water. Hydrogen peroxide is water with an extra oxygen molecule. It's safe and clears up respiratory distress. Bacteria cannot survive in a high oxygen environment..really this is great. I run it in my house every couple days just to clean the air too.

I also read that if you have a tooth problem, it can cause sinus problem, which causes cough. In that case, until you can see a dentist, rinse your mouth with peroxide several times a day. (do NOT swallow!) This is good to relieve toothache also.

Thx all for suggestions!

The absolutely most important thing anyone can do to get rid of a cough is quit smoking...none of this will work if you smoke...it will only get worse until you die. non smokers... warmed honey and lemon.

Try and feel the miracles of CLOVE
1 teaspoon honey and a pinch of clove powder(Lightly baked) take in the empty stomach and before bedtime at night. Do not drink water or anything minimum half an hour after above the medicine.
#244 - Sathya - 10/13/2010 - 00:03
get vicks vapo or @ wallmart the equate vicks (has same exact ingredients as vicks brand) Rub on neck and chest, put on t-shirt, take another t-shirt, wrap around neck, kind a like a turtle neck, breath in the vapors, go to bed, you will stop coughing, later if you need more vicks just rub a little more on neck or t-shirt and breath in again. My husband is 71 and his mama did this to him when he was a kid. I did it last night and it WORKS
#245 - bama yank - 10/16/2010 - 14:57

For all types of old cough and broncitus. Take green and hard guava (not fully ripe) cut a deep small window up to its centre. Put some salt into the window. Place the removed cut part again to close that small window. Bake the guava in microwave or other oven uptill it become soft and seems as riped. Eat it when it is hot. Eating one or two guava daily for one week will remove the cough forever. My promise.

My mother suffers every year with cough. Coughs continues for 5 to 10 minutes and again in an hour coughs for 5 to 10 minutes. Doctor advised inhaler 'Combiheal' still it did not worked out. Please suggest some home remedy or medicine. my email : [email protected]

Well, I tried this :
Taking in a lot of honey with lemon and grape juice which coated my throat (also those germs as they stick to it)
Then in small coughs, I coughed it out, the honey takes off that nasty layer of irritating cough. and grape helps it soothe down
Then drink warm water.
:-)

Not sure if this has already been mentioned, because reading the full page seemed a silly idea just to check, but I'll try and sum up a few treatments in the comments - much like the original post did.

- My personal favourite for all colds (not just coughs) is to get into your warmest clothes, (skiwear if you have it, hat, gloves, scarf, the works) and get all available bedding. Snuggle up so you're literally boiling hot and watch the TV, read a novel or try and catch some sleep (works well with Vic on the feet too!). This is most effective when you first notice the cold coming on, if you catch it quick, a day of this should sweat it all out. Be sure to drink lots of water too!

- Whichever way you want to look at it, lemon, salt and pepper works well. I tend to do it like a tequila shot because you don't lose salt and pepper everywhere. But lick your hand, pour both salt and pepper on it and then suck a lemon before swallowing.

- Any combination of ginger, honey, lime, lemon works well whether boiled, drunk, gargelled or inhaled.

- For blocked noses there is no better cure (in my opinion of course) than Olbas Oil, boil a kettle and pour it into a sink or bowl, put 2-3 drops of the oil into the water and then cover your head with a towel to isolate the fumes you are inhaling, 2-3 minutes should be enough for relief. However, this will need to be repeated daily, if not every 4-5 hours.

help! during this time of year, im very busy with work and ive come down with a terrible cough!!! it's been about 5 days, and it feels like there is something in my throat! at night when i cough, my stomach really hurts, and sometimes my head. i cant concentrate on doing ANYTHING because it's so ichy and uncomfortable. also, about 10 days ago i suffered from a dry throat/cough, where my throat just felt super dry and itchy. i drank lemon and tea, and it cured it right off the bat. i went to the doctors and they said to just drink lemon and tea for this cough, but it hasnt been helping, because it's different. Hi, I have a terrible fever and productive cough and lately i have been coughing so much that i have vomited out blood and phlegm a number of times.
Every time i try to put a lozenge in my mouth or a clove i end of coughing it out. So far, the main things that are helping me is lying flat on my back and/or applying vicks on my feet honestly though, how long do you think I can lie down staring at the stars with wet soppy feet. Please if anybody knows any remedies that have not been listed above, possibly a little different because the ones above keep repeating the same things over and over and it is not that i don't appreciate them because i do but it is just that they do not work for me as well as it may for someone else because everybody has a different system and my system will not respond to these remedies, so if you could kindly post some advice on a home remedy that is easy to set up and easy to perform that would be extremely helpful to me.
Thank you for your time everybody

Hello everyone, how are you? Better than me I hope :-)
I've had this constant cough for over 4 months. It started out as a cold like symptoms, with runny nose and sore throat and after 2 weeks and a few cold medicine capsules and or liquid (before bedtime), it became what I have now, which is a cough, induced by a constant small amounts of mucus (too small to cough out to see the color) that keeps reproducing in my throat. I noticed it temporarily stops as soon as I start to eat anything. I suspect that after drinking the cold medicine liquid (before bedtime) some months ago, acid reflux reached my throat and perhaps caused some damage/infection at the esophagus. (?)
I rarely take any medicines, so, the thought of going to the doctor, only to get a prescription for antibiotics, is the reason why I'm still suffering. If anyone out there has or had similar symptoms, please, any input will be greatly appreciated. I'm debating going to the ER, rather than a walk in clinic. I'm searching for Natural Remedies.Thank you all in advance for your replies. Take care. T.

ive tried so many home products and i still suffer from a dry exhausting cough
#287 - cree - 01/17/2011 - 21:52
I've had non-productive coughing fits in conjunction with a cold. I also have 5% of coughs produce small ammounts of mucus. Constantly drinking tea or sucking cough drops is a pain. I'm trying ordinary gum (actually a gum like object I found in my desk) to keep some saliva flowing and that seems to help control the fits.

Cough is a defensive mechanism of clearing the airways of mucous, foreign body, irritants or some type of blockage. Coughs are often accompanied by colds and other airways infections. Bronchial cough is tight and painful. A sinus infection generally drips mucous down the throat, producing cough. Croupy cough produce a loud raspy sound, bringing up phlegm with difficulty.

me and my 3 year old daughter were having dry cough. Onion syrup stopped the cough really fast. Onion is really good for flu too.. Cut onion into thin circles, layer them up in a small bowl, with sugar in between the layers.. let it stay for 20 mins , drain the juice and drink it.. This will continue to make juice, just add sugar as needed.. coughing will stop right away !!:-D

I had been up for 4 days of no sleep from coughing spasms…could not get more than 4 or 5 minutes of sleep in a row (I took to watching a clock to see if I had been asleep at all). The doc gave me hydrocodone cough syrup which made me pretty happy but did not stop the coughing. I felt like my whole chest was bruised from the violent coughing fits. I checked out acupressure for coughs and there were a number of pressure points they suggested. None of these worked in my case. The spasm would start under my right breast bone –kinda in that hollow in the center just under the breast and a little to the right. If I tried to suppress or ignore the spasm it would just get stronger and stronger and travel into my gut forcing me to cough. I found the exact spot where the cough spasm would start…it’s a nerve that wants to alert the body to expel stuff but this was a “dry” cough… then I pressed my finger tips into the spot. I found that that would not only pretty much stop the cough spasm but I fell asleep that way for 4 blessed hours without coughing once! It sounds awkward to sleep with your fingers pressed under your ribcage but I was desperate. Then last night I fell asleep on my stomach with the flat of my hand pressed over that same cough nerve in the same spot and slept another 6 hours. Now if the cough starts during the day at an inconvenient time, I can stop it even if the cough nerve has already started the spasm. I had to share this blessed relief.

I had a horrible cough that lasted about 5 weeks. It was almost like whooping cough (which it very well may have been since I am allergic to the pertussis vaccine) with mucus and hacking and awful, swollen cheeks and sinus pain. I went on a course of antibiotics for the second time in my life, something I try to avoid at all costs, and it didn't get rid of it. I began doing the honey and white pepper two to three times a day and it cured what antibiotics could not. thank you forum! I also enjoyed reading through other people's experiences, commiserating with you all, and getting good ideas. Be well!

Add a quarter tsp. of turmeric and of black pepper powder to a warm glass of milk or add according as per your taste. This will definitely give you relief from coughing.

My husband has been driving me nutts with his persistant cough. After reading all the suggestions here on this site, I gave him the lemon with salt and pepper and also rub vicks on feet and added socks. So far so good! Thanks.........
#329 - betterhalf - 05/30/2011 - 23:41
The vicks and socks thing is working great for me for the cough. I was having trouble breathing with clogged up passages and just want to add that a vaporizer is a Godsend and opens up the nasal passages. It is hell being sick... :(
#330 - Gypsy Boots - 06/25/2011 - 06:48
as much as i hated to try it, i had no choice. i tried the salt and pepper on a lemon. it worked.

Peppermints can help!
#333 - Doesn't matter - 08/11/2011 - 12:12
Grandmothers recipe:
2Tbsp unsalted butter (warm it up so it slightly melts)
2Tbsp honey, local honey works best for people with allergies (heat it up and mix well with butter)
2Tbsp Vodka (no don't be generous)
2Tbsp Aloe Vera raw juice (the actual plant, peal and use the inside jelly part) you can find the plant at Lowes I'm sure, it's a great plant to keep if you like home remedies.
Mix it all together, I like to refrigerate it before using. Take little tsp. size portion and lick it so it dissolves slowly in your mouth and you will feel your throat warming up. Very soothing.
We were given this as little kids in small portions, worked like magic.
You can refrigerate it up to a week.

Here in New Zealand there is a plant called Kumerahou. Grows wild in poor soils Northland. It was used years and years ago to cure asthma. It's great for coughs, free on the roadsides, but tastes pretty horrid. It's also used as a blood purifier. If you search the web, you will find recipes for it, basically you boil it up like tea. I always keep a bottle around for the kids.
#336 - Es - 09/04/2011 - 04:53
Had the worst cough ever last night. Just wouldnt stop. I did the vicks on leg option, then milk + turmeric + pepper option, then gulpedmultiple cough suppresants. Nothing would stop it. Each would stop i for 15-20 mins then it would come back full swing. Finally somehow fell asleep. Today morning the vicks on leg + socks option seems to work. Now I had hot water + pepper + ginger + turmeric + maple syrup ( as I didnt have honey). lets see how it goes
#337 - Raj - 09/07/2011 - 12:53

for slight dry cough that won't go away even after taking cough misture. Take the cod liver oil in capsule form 3 times a day. It always works for me.

#349 - bad coough - 11/10/2011 - 17:24
Needed: hot water, Green tea (preferably fresh), pinch of white pepper, lemon juice, honey. Leave the green tea + white pepper in the hot water for about 5min, add lemon juice (about 2 tbs for 1l), add honey (not too much though) and finally DRINK. Reduces cough, lung obstructions, runny nose etc. I am a professional athlete so when I feel a cold/cough coming up, I try to take preventive measures so don't wait until it's too late. Also, although not really relevant to the context of this website, I take Vit C, Vit E, Magnesium & kalium as supplements. Hope it helps..
#350 - Robinp - 11/15/2011 - 07:07
THANK YOU to #229 and everyone else who said that lemon juice, salt, and pepper works.....it DOES! It sounded crazy but I was willing to try anything that I had in the house at 12:45 AM, and a days worth of coughing! I read it, tried it, and I couldn't believe how fast it worked. I put Vicks on my feet also and I feel 100% better today! I wish I had known all this when my kids were still at home......I'm pushing 60! Thank you all again for your 'advice' to Grandma here! "Home remedies" are tops on my list!

#353 - Cecille - 12/26/2011 - 12:05
umm for babies, this is not for everyone but it works wonders if it works. cut a foil (enough to wrap around its finger at least 2 times) wrap it around the third finger, right beneath the nail, not the whole finger but a little strip, and before it unravels, wrap the foil-finger strip with a bandage for those who thinks this is ridiculous, a reason.. the muscle of the third finger, especially beneath the nail, is connected to the neck so it's like wrapping the foil around the neck to preserve the heat except it's comfortable. IT WORKS, just not for every baby
#354 - katie - 12/26/2011 - 20:28

try beating an egg yolk and add black coffee, a bit of sugar to taste, drink it hot. It will soothe your cough and nourish you too. It always works!!! Good luck and be well!
#363 - Lee - 02/26/2012 - 12:16
Not sure about Vicks Vapor Rub doing much if applied to the feet, but there is a variant that works every time without fail. Sorry this method only works for men. Instead of putting the Vicks on your feet, put it on your balls. You won't cough for hours because you'll be too busy screaming and whimpering.
#364 - MadCougher - 03/19/2012 - 21:58
Had a very bad cold and flu that did not wnt to go away with every meds that was prescribed by my doc. Put little vicks vapor rub on my nostrils and forehead. in 2 days all flu and cold was gone. For my coughing I used 1 table spoon sugar, 1 table spoon vinegar, mixed with 1 tblspoon clean cooking oil at night it works well, it also helps to drink plain hot water during the day and before bedtime. Vicks is a very old remedy made naturaly by our forfathers. It was a excellent for flu and colds then that is why it is still on the market today. It is too good to be presribed by a doc. Go get it over the counter!!!

Doing alot of talking also increase the cough, it is better to try and relax your lungs during the day, do as little laughing and raising your voice as possible. Try it, it realy works. Hope you guys get well soon
God bless

#366 - Heiress - 06/30/2012 - 05:24
hello. I read all of the remedies here and some of these such as the onion syrup jogged my memory. my brother whenever he is sick runs to the fridge and eats a raw onion. i have always thought he was a lil crazy until this eve. I have had a cough for al,ost a week now. My chest back and everything is killing me. I am sooo tired becase I can not sleep due to it. i recalled the raw onion thing. i was desperate. i did it i ate the onion. it was small yellow onion and i just ate about a quarter of it. i instantly felt something loosen in my chest and could take a full breath without hacking. it really works. i also ate a raw clove of garlic. i found out that both of these veg have anti inflammitory properties and also have the same affect as an antibiotic. thought i would share something that actually works. also did the vicks feet thing 9relieves some of the cough but not open up the airway) The congestion is now loose after only 15 minutes of ingesting the onion. i researched and this is proven on natural remedy sites. i hate to admit my lil brother actually knows something. this DOES work please try this if yoiu are suffering. again i have has this cough for almost a week and heavy congestion in the sinus area and chest. my nasal passages are now open and phlegm is now loose..it happened the second i ate the onion. i took the garlic as i remeber reading somewhere it is like and antibiotic and to eat 1 clove every 4 hours (like a med) I will stick with this as I have nowhere to go so I can have stinky breath right now. I would rather be able to breath and smell funky than feel like an elephant on my chest Please again try this it really is working I could not lay down without having a coughing fit and I can lie down now.going to finally get some sleep after 4 nights with none
#367 - beencoughin - 10/29/2012 - 21:31
Ok. 3 weeks ago, on a Monday, i started with a cough. I took Robitussin DM and that helped for the first week. that weekend i was all better, so i thought. Then that Monday i started with my sinuses with a sore throat and stuffy nose. I took some sinus medicine for a few days and then my cough came back, and worse this time. For the past 3 or 4 nights i have not been able to get much sleep at all. It was all i could do yo get up this morning and go to school as i didn't want to miss. I have tried just about everything. Medicines don't help, vicks on the chest or feet doesn't help, the vaporizer doesn't help. i want to try the honey thing but i don't have any honey. So i am going to try the raw onion method. what do i have to lose! I just want something to help me get a good nights sleep. my cough is dry (non-productive) with maybe a little phlegm in the mornings right after i wake up. Does anyone else have any suggestions for if the onion doesn't work?? Please help me...

my husband and I both have a dry cough we have tried lots of meds and nothing is working for us.
#370 - sandy - 02/03/2013 - 11:18
honestly, My daughter woke up this morning with a bad, phlegmy cough. So I googled home remedy for cough and got this site. I tried honey. Didn't work. So I tried the lemon with pepper and salt. Bingo!!!!!!! Within 5-10 minutes the cough was 90% gone!!!!!!! NO FOOLING!!
#371 - shika - 02/07/2013 - 11:50
Run several cloves of fresh garlic in food processor until it's a paste. Rub fresh garlic paste on the bottom of your feet then put socks on. Brush teeth normally with tooth paste. Follow up by brushing teeth with remaining fresh garlic paste. No coughing and you will sleep like a hibernating bear.
#372 - TC Steve - 02/10/2013 - 13:14
It's almost 3am w/this persistent cough....tried the lemon w/salt & pepper & have instant relief. Thanks for the tip!!!

Tired the vicks on my sons feet and the lemon juice with honey. He slept all nite. Still a bit of a cough but now we know how to fix it for nite.
#374 - Mom - 03/29/2013 - 18:41
I cough for about five minutes after I eat. Doc says it is gerd and prescribe a med for it. Not taking the med because it has some long lasting horrible side effects and there are several lawsuits against them, so back to square one. I do take a prilosec two times a day but so far no relief. Got some lemon head candy, trying that after dinner, used to work when we were kids.
#375 - Shay - 07/03/2013 - 16:00
This article has a glaring contradiction in it, in the section "Other remedies for cough" it suggests making a paste from almonds, butter & sugar, then in the next paragraph "Diet for cough" it says "avoid sugar"!! Helpful advice. NOT.
#376 - Moi - 11/27/2013 - 07:47
i have seen nd read many of dem have said to use lemon for cough...lemon is very cold for our body...specially for cold cough it doesnt cure instead it becomes more...
#377 - manju - 12/02/2013 - 11:11
for cough that seems endless I make a tea of garlic and oregano , strain it , then pour in about 1/2 cup and since it is too hot to sip take a spoon to drink it with , after you took 3 spoons of tea then take a spoon of pure honey ( the one that has the comb ) after that don't drink nothing cold . Also I always heard when pregnant don't drink certain herbs , best to see a Doctor , they prescribe the best medicines .
#378 - Louisa Leal - 12/11/2013 - 08:30
I'm about 2 coughs away from a nervous breakdown! My 5 year old has had a deep, barking cough and its getting worse. She's been to the doctor and on prednisone, cough medicines, nebulizer, inhalers, tried the vicks on the feet with socks and also on the chest and back and NOTHING has helped! Can anyone help me???
#379 - Noel - 12/14/2013 - 16:08
To Noel, try a tablespoon of butter sprinkled with raw sugar-that simple- and have your 5year old eat it. A vaporizor usually works for small children as well.
#380 - Margaret - 12/16/2013 - 00:46
I rubbed Vicks on the bottom of my 7 yr olds feet with socks to follow and no more coughing. He was coughing his head off. It has my vote.
#381 - Lisa g - 12/19/2013 - 21:32
I have severe bronchitis that turns into pneumonia at least twice a year. My pulmonanologist has said that Vicks Vapor Rub on the bottom on the feet is not good. Yes, it does "help"some people, but does more damage to most.

#385 - su - 03/16/2014 - 13:20
I have two remedies for a cough:

1. A good sipping rum when you have that tickle kind of cough.
2. Prepare green tea in a pan using 3 or 4 tea bags with two sliced lemons, lots of honey, and about 8 Halls lozenges. Put all ingredients in a pan with about a quart of water. Heat to a boil and enjoy. This will help with the cough,as well as, clear nasal passages.

#388 - Jennifer pennell - 04/16/2015 - 21:59
You should remove the picture of marshmallows - which are made of sugar.

The "marsh mallow" that the article refers to is a mallow plant that grows in marshes.

My Grandmother carried rubbing alcohol in her purse to avoid coughing spasms in church when I was a child. I now have COPD and If I get a bug It always ends up in my lungs. I'll vouch for a sniff when you don't have anything else.
I'm not saying make it a habit, but if your bent over hacking and can't stop It works...
