Remedy for Sore Throat
For sore throats, get some hot water (but not boiling) and some honey, stir that up, and it's not quite good, but it'll help.

This is something I just came up with because I didn't have everything needed for any of the other ones. I filled a coffee mug a third of the way with water, heating it up, mixed in two spoonfuls of honey and some lemon juice and stir it together.
#3 - Cassie - 01/03/2008 - 13:45
My Grandma suggested using peroxide as a gargle and rinse, and then put some hot water in a coffee mug, mix in two tablespoons of honey with a little bit of lemon juice. It did help some.

Here's an old Ukrainian home remedy for sore throats. It sounds weird, but apparently it works, though it might have some kind of placebo effect on people: Wrap a large, raw cabbage leaf around your neck and tie it there with something, and leave it there for half an hour to an hour. The cabbage leaf is supposed to draw out the pain from your throat, and it doesn't really matter what kind of cabbage leaf you use.

However, raw garlic is the remedy for sore throats that I think I like best. Get a good-sized raw clove of garlic and chop it up into small pieces of any kind. First, take a piece or two and chew them up, using mostly the molars in the back of the mouth. Swallow hard. Then, take another piece or two of the garlic and swallow them with water, just like you would medicine. After that chew up some more raw garlic and repeat until you've finished the entire clove. This remedy helps best when you drink hot tea immediately after, though, probably because of the burning sensation the raw garlic will usually inflict on your tongue, and it might get the mucus in your throat working up a little bit, but the relief should be pretty much instantaneous. The fresh raw garlic sort of both numbs your mouth and throat and helps to kill the bad bacteria in your esophagus. :-)

i HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT DIFFERENT WEBSITES AND YOUR SUGGESTION COMES UP OFTEN(APPLE CIDER VINAGER) AT FIRST, I GARGLED AND THEN SWALLOWED LIKE A GLUG OF COFFEE. END RESULT WASN'T VERY PRETTY. THANK YOU FOR CLARIFYING THAT IT SHOULD BE SIPPED. B-)
#13 - LORI - 07/27/2008 - 19:26
THE BEST THING IS TAKING A PIECE OF RAW GARLIC AND EATING IT. I REALLY SUGGEST EATING THE GARLIC WITH MEAT. I WILL ADMIT THE TASTE ISN'T REALLY GOOD, BUT IT WILL BE GONE IN 3 DAYS AT THE MOST.YOU WILL FEEK BETTER.;-)
#14 - TINYWIFEY - 08/28/2008 - 19:04
I am going to try the Apple cider and Vinigar. My daughter has been getting sore throats often through out the past month, and she may need her tonsils removed but anyway, the thing that works the best is Apple Cider and Vinegar. I hear alot on here and from my girlfriends! My husband also thinks this will work on my little four year old! Thank you for your help!

The two things that work for me are;
1: A fresh tomato sliced thick (about the size of 2 regular tomato slices) and fried in a pan til skin is fried and tomato is soggy. Add salt and enjoy!

2: 1 1/2 lemons sqeezed in a coffee mug, 1 tablespoon of salt, HOT water stir well and enjoy!

These two work great for me! I hope they are as effective for you!
#16 - SickyPoo - 09/21/2008 - 03:03
Heya i've been suffering with a terrible sore throat . it hurts everytime i swallow. what a pain!

this is an effective home remedy:
fill about half a coffee mug with hot water, add 1 pinch ground ginger, 3 squirts lemon juice, 1 tablespoon honey. mix it all up and drink. sip slowly to get use to the taste and heat. it may taste a bit bleh but it works well.

you can also try lemonade warmed up, or Buckleys Canadol Mixture, or ginger milk (you just boil milk and add some tumeric and ginger powder, mmmmmm)
#17 - Nikita - 09/27/2008 - 19:45
TO Anna!

It is not apple cider AND vinegar, it is apple cider vinegar!
Although I imagine the combo of apple cider and vinegar is most likely also soothing.

VERY IMPORTANT to all reading this page - I would not use peroxide in your throat! That could be very dangerous, it will completely destroy the flesh if done wrong, making your sore throat much much worse!!! That suggestion should be removed. Who's moderating this site? Anyone?

Ok so i got a really bad sore throat, i even lost my voice. and school is tomorrow. All day i have been doing, gargles of hot salt water, and lemon. i also drank lemon and honey mixed together, eventually im feeling a little bit better, my voice is starting to come back, but if i talk for too much then it goes away. Early in the morning, i drank 3 teaspoons of milk and garlic, it is not a pleasant feeling, but i stopped coughing. i also suggest you drink orange juice. Keep yourself from drinking, cold beverages, if you're going to drink water, drink it warm. Another good recipe, is apricott. Boil the appricott, until its melted, dont boil too much just what you think you may be able to drink, well actually eat because it has appricotts. it actually tastes quite good, serve it in a cup and drink it with a spoon. The effect may not appear right away, but it will help your throat, when it feels the warm appricott, and open the passageways. Hope i helped, if you do this twice a day, u will probably be better in 3 days.

i have a really bad infection in my throat. sores, cant talk, swallow, it feels like my tonsils don't have skin on them anymore. i haven't been able to eat ANY food in 4 days because i cant swallow anything at all, nothing, not even a little.
my doctor gave me some huge pills that just aren't helping fast enough.
anyways, a friend showed me a way to ease the pain, dramatically speed up recovery, and kind of make my throat feel better/refreshed.
-mix hydrogen peroxide and iodine(i dont know EXACTLY how much my friend used, it doesn't have to be exact, she used what looked like twice as much peroxide than iodine, the mixture will be dark brown..)
-you can either gargle/ swish it, or take 2 q-tips, dip them in the mixture, and pretty much rub it all over your tonsils and throat.
-spit it out of course shortly after you do this..its okay if you cant spit out every little bit.
it does NOT taste bad.
it does NOT hurt at all. i think it feels really good actually :]
it will fight off the infection, and get all of the nasty stuff off of your throat, making you feel very refreshed..
:-D

I always try to use non-medicinal remedies before resorting to medications or over-the-counter drugs just in case it’s just a passing allergy symptom or something. I’ve always liked ice pops when I got a sore throat- My mom used to give me them when I was a kid. It seems that the cooling aspect of the ice pop makes your throat less scratchy. Recently, I found a product called Throat Cooler which has honey and Vitamin C in it and less sugar than the ice pops I've been having. I plan to keep my freezer stocked with these healthy ice pops during the upcoming fall allergy season. :-)
#21 - Jess - 10/13/2008 - 09:24
I try to use only natural remedies and when my 11 year old son has a scratchy or dry thought, I give him a ThroatCooler. Its a vitamin C and honey ice pop that I bought at the grocery store. He thinks it’s just an ice pop but it soothes his throat and keeps him in a better state of mind. :-D
#22 - Sandra - 10/16/2008 - 10:16
i have a question about the throatcooler pops - you said you can get them at the grocery store - where, in the popsicle section, or the medicine section & then take them home to freeze yourself?
thanx.
ps - i gargle with hydrogen peroxide every day in place of mouthwash. as long as you don't swallow, it won't hurt you! it is safe to do, & has kept me from getting recurrent periodontitis & mouth/tongue ulcers. it's cheaper than mouthwash, & doesn't burn!! :o)

I've always done the salt and luke warm water trick. Normally helps it but to be completely honest i dont think it speeds up the process. I always have strep.
It might work for you, try doing it about every hour. Remeber luke warm water not cold!
;-)

When I was in college I went on sick list with a sore throat. A nurse came by to see me. She told me to take a small piece of fabric (a folded up clean washcloth would do) and get it wet with cold water. Wring it out so it wouldn't drip. Place it on the front of my neck. Then wrap my neck with any long sock. (Back then leg warmers were in so I was in luck.) Leave this on all night and in the morning my sore throat would be gone. I thought she was nuts! She laughed and said she thought it was nuts too when she first heard about this idea. My throat hurt so bad though that I went ahead and tried it. I couldn't believe my throat was not sore at all the next day! She said this has something to do with the cold bringing blood to the area allowing for quicker healing. It really does work...Try and see for yourself!
#25 - jlissar - 11/22/2008 - 17:12

#26 - shadow - 11/29/2008 - 20:03
So I woke up this morning and my throat was hurting sooo bad! Now it hurts everytime I swallow and it just hurts so much in general. The other symptoms I have are: sneezy/runny nose, nasal congestion and a headache. I took some multi-symptom medicine but it didn't work. I also tried to gargle with slat water but that didn't help either. Does anyone know some good home remedies? Pleaseeee i'm desperate.
#27 - Ray. - 12/06/2008 - 14:09
I have always had good luck with warm salt water gargle it 2 times an hr if you can. I had tonsilitis all the time when I was a kid usually every year the doc said that I would outgrow it, the las time I had it was when I was 18 I haven't had it since and I am 37 so I did outgrow it. So mayne talk to the doc before having her tonsils removed, tell him or her my story.
#28 - lisa - 12/11/2008 - 02:30

hey i have had a sore throught for about 4 days now and i have tried pills and medicine but nothing has worked......what can i do that cures my throat fastly??????????? HELP!>-(
#30 - SICKGIRL - 12/31/2008 - 14:38
This may sounds strange at first but it does help. My grandmom told me this. Buy a pear and eat it as you normally would. Wash it and eat with the skin on, but this time eat it alot slower letting the juices run down your throat. Something in the juices of the pear helps. It is not instant but improvement is shown in a day or two. I recommend at least 3 pears spread out through out each day. Sounds odd that a pear of all fruits would help but I use this rememdy every time along with alot of vitamin C.
#31 - Grace - 01/04/2009 - 21:19
just gargled with 1 tblspoon of ceyene pepper and warm water, feels better
i am a huge fan of bragg apple cider vinegar, 2 spoons honey 2spoon acv and 8 oz water
everyday it is the best for health
#32 - rick - 01/12/2009 - 08:12
Sounds crazy but this always helps with sore throat caused by nasal drainage or any other kind of nasal issues I have ever had... Snort... yes snort warm salty water. You will need to be standing over the sink because you will make a mess other wise. It is easiest to plug one side of your nose and suck from a cup with the other side. Spit out anything that goes into your mouth or blow it back out your nose. This is a horrible feeling remedy for about 2 seconds but the results are almost instant and always well worth it once its done. I just can't stand the taste of salt water or the feeling of water going up my nose.
#33 - Megan - 02/15/2009 - 17:11
We have pictures as kids with the remedy jlissar (#25) posted....I still use it today and it does work! It also has helped with annoying bedtime coughing.
#34 - magda0208 - 02/18/2009 - 11:26

#35 - tt - 02/19/2009 - 21:23
birds nest - it's a special birds nest that it found in caves parts of Asia, particularly in Vietnam, Indonesia, China and Thailand. i don't know where to find it except the Asian market - it comes in a small jar and is often mixed with rock sugar. just be sure to get the concentrated kind not the birds nest drink. i put it in the fridge for awhile. goes down nice when it is cold and feels better on your throat. don't worry they use a process to clean the nests, something about the amino acids that makes it work. about $3-4 for a small bottle - you will probably only need one.
#36 - geo - 02/21/2009 - 11:59
The "Diet" for Sore Throat listed above always works for me. As soon as I start feeling that I may get a sore throat I take it and it stops it (I use 1/2 a lemon or lime). Last time I got a very painful sore throat I took 3 cups (morning, noon, & night), and then 1 the following morning; thats how long it took for the pain to go away completely :)
Although I dont like the smell of the cayene, it does not taste bad at all.;-)
#37 - Nora - 03/05/2009 - 20:50

Ginger root works wonders!!! Just cut up some ginger root put in water, simmer to boil. Let it sit for a few. Sip sowly. You will tell its working by the tingling in your throat. I don't add anything to it.
#41 - Angela - 04/03/2009 - 16:01
Take 2-3 whole cloves & put them in your mouth. Chew on them slightly to release the juice in the cloves. Don't eat the cloves, just suck on the juice. This numbs the throat (& mouth) & takes away the pain for hours. Also, try Russian tea which also has ground cloves in it to help numb the pain as well. Works for me!
#42 - Rhoder - 04/11/2009 - 17:17
Mix a few teaspoons of vinegar with a cup of water and gargle and swallow. The vinegar will natural kill bacteria in the throat.

It's gross tasting, but it's the only thing that works for me when I get really sick, besides medicine, of course.
#43 - Ashley - 04/12/2009 - 16:53
I know this sound crazy but it definately works everytime i have a sore throat.

soak a wash cloth in rubbing alcohol but not were it drips. then tie the wash cloth around you neck and sleep with it on overnight. in the morning your sore throat will be gone. The smell is the only bad thing but you get use to it after a while.
#44 - Lizzie - 04/21/2009 - 16:37

#46 - Estrella - 04/23/2009 - 16:08
Grapefruit Seed Extract is the best cure! It has antibacterial qualities and kills what's causing the sore throat. Add 10 drops GSE, honey to taste and lemon juice to a cup of warm water. Stir it well as the GSE is thick and will stick to the bottom of the cup. Drink it, sipping it slowly. Do this twice in a day and you will no longer have a sore throat. Warning: GSE is bitter. If you're brave you can skip the lemon and honey and it will still work wonders. GSE is available for purchase at most health food stores.
#47 - Kim - 4/26/09 - 04/26/2009 - 14:54
When I was a kid growing up my mother always would direct me to use the gargle with salt water method - I found this was as effective as taking cough drops ... seemed to work while I was doing it but as soon as I stopped the irritation would return.

Recently I did a google search for "sore throat home remedies" and found many pages suggesting the ACV route so I decided to employ it. I used the following recipe:

***
Lemon, Apple Cider Vinegar, Cayenne, and Honey Tea

An old home remedy for sore throats is a tea made with lemon, apple cider vinegar, cayenne, and honey.

It is made by adding one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper, the juice of 1/4 lemon, and one teaspoon of honey to a cup of hot water. Stir.

***

I must say this has been the most effective treatment I have used to date (I just did this a few hours ago so the long term effects are not yet known - tomorrow AM the sore throat could return I suppose .... but based on the results so far this is my new solution.

Additionally I want to agree with an earlier poster about NOT using peroxide. I have no scientific reason why not to use it other than I just sounds a bit dangerous.

Good luck all!!

Someone on here freaked about gargling with peroxide....lol
Peroxide is a WONDERFUL Gargle not only for sore throat but also those annoying sores you tend to get if you bite your tongue or inside your cheek. It also whitens your teeth and kills all plaque. Thumbs up to a peroxide gargle for any type of open sore in your mouth. I also brush with baking soda....just powder up your toothbrush and go at it. Feels great and leaves your mouth germ free! The more germs you have in your mouth the more it will fizz...perhaps that was why the person did not like it. But it is doing it's job and nothing is wrong with the fizzing. I suppose it is just like using on any other cut or wound. If you use it on an infected wound it will fizz and burn. Have some honey after and that will soothe the burn.
#50 - Rose - 05/29/2009 - 00:01
Peroxide is not going to burn our throat skin.....lol
Its really good on infections in the throat, add some warm water and some salt and gargle... the ACV is a good one also... I have saved much money in home cures and dont plan on going to the Docs unless I have too...!!!
#51 - roger - 05/29/2009 - 16:07
Although apple cider vinegar may be effective in aiding a sore throat, due to the naturally occurring sulfites, allergic reactions to vinegar are extremely common these days.
If you are using it for the first time, especially with a young child or toddler, watch closely for any signs of a reaction.
Symptoms to look out for are:
- tingling of the mouth
- swelling of the mouth, lip, tongue, throat or eyes
- coughing or difficulty breathing
- vommiting
- abdominal pain
- hives, rash or redness of skin
Note: not all symptoms have to be present in an allergic reaction.
I myself was a huge fan of the ACV remedy until oneday I stopped breathing. I was shocked to find I had a severe allergy to sulfites (preservatives 220 - 229). All the small bouts of nausea, skin rashes and coughing fits I had been dismissing for months had finally turned into a full blown anaphylactic reaction where my airway closed completely and I was unable to get any air in or out.
Obviously Im not saying not to use apple cidar vinegar, like any product just be cautious if you are using it for the first time.

Throat hurts soooo bad and im kinda scared of having saltwater coz ill drink it and hurl. so can anyone else helP? help appreciated.

#53 - Ben - 06/05/2009 - 01:19
Peroxide is FINE to gargle with, it will not hurt you in any way unless you were to drink a large amount. Even if you swallow a bit when gargling it will not hurt you. The peroxide you buy at the drug store is highly diluted, it is 97% water and only 3% peroxide. It even suggests using it as a gargle on the label!!! It's great a killing germs. Gargle 3 times every 2 to 4 hours and you will notice a big improvement. I also like to take a teaspoon of honey after gargling, it will coat your throat and provide some relief.B-)
