During the third trimester of pregnancy swelling of feet and lower legs is the normal problem that affects almost 90 percent of the pregnant women. It is also known as edema.
Causes of Swelling of Feet
The various causes of swelling during pregnancy are:
- Increase in the blood volume
- High intake of sodium and caffeine
- Long standing periods
- Low levels of potassium in diet
- High levels of uric acid in the blood
Home Remedies for Swelling of Feet
Barley water is a good diuretic that helps in reducing the swelling.
Boil a few tablespoons of coriander seed in two cups of water. Stop boiling when the liquid is reduced to one cup. This is a good home remedy for swelling of feet during pregnancy.
Its best to rest with the feet up after short intervals of time.
Keeping the feet under running cold water for 10-15 minutes before resting will provide relief from edema. This is also good home remedy for swelling of feet.
Coffee and alcoholic drinks should be avoided as they dehydrate the body from essential fluids.
Salty foods and snacks should also be avoided.
A well balanced diet including all the essential nutrients is highly beneficial
